SUMMARY:Data Stories in Indian Country
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us December 13 for an event focused on innovative ways that Native communities\, policymakers\, and researchers are gathering and working with data to tell a more complete story of Indian Country. This event culminates the Center for Indian Country Development’s (CICD’s) 2023 webinar series: Cultivating Native Economies in the 21st Century. The series provides tribal leaders\, policymakers\, and practitioners with information they can use to strengthen and expand Indian Country economic prosperity. \n\n\n\nInformation on our communities teaches us about ourselves and helps us tell our stories. For too long\, data gaps in Indian Country have masked Native economic contributions and limited policymakers’ understanding of how to best direct resources. Today\, tribal governments are advancing data-collection systems on their own terms\, and new partnerships between Native communities and federal agencies are increasing Native Americans’ representation in national datasets. \n\n\n\nOur December 13 event will feature conversations with tribal leaders\, policymakers\, researchers\, and practitioners who are strengthening their collection and use of data—in ways that honor tribal data sovereignty. Speakers working with tribal governments\, Alaska Native Corporations\, and Native Hawaiian Organizations will reflect on what data are still needed to provide a more complete picture of Indian Country. CICD staff will also demonstrate new data tools available for understanding local and national economic conditions and opportunities. \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll be part of this important conversation. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nElliot Charette (Lac Du Flambeau and Red Cliff Bands of Lake Superior Chippewa)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nMaranda Compton (Delaware Tribe of Indians)\, Alexander Blewett III School of Law\, University of Montana\n\n\n\nAbigail Echo-Hawk (Pawnee)\, Seattle Indian Health Board\n\n\n\nLeonard “Lenny” Fineday (Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe)\, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe\n\n\n\nMatthew Gregg\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nAndrew Huff (Chippewa Cree Tribe)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nAmalea Jubara\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nCasey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nVaRene Martin (Mvskoke Nation)\, NAFOA\n\n\n\nRobert Miller (Eastern Shawnee Tribe)\, Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law\, Arizona State University\n\n\n\nRyan Nunn\, Community Development and CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nVanessa Palmer\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nVanessa Roanhorse (Navajo)\, Roanhorse Consulting\n\n\n\nAmber Schulz-Oliver (Celilo/Yakama)\, Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians Economic Development Corporation\n\n\n\nDarien Siguenza (Chamorro)\, Hawai‘i FoundHer\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Modernized Community Reinvestment Act and Indian Country
DESCRIPTION:A conversation on what the updated regulations mean for Native communities\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe invite you to join us November 28 for a conversation about recent updates to the regulations implementing the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) and how Indian Country could benefit. The event will feature key leaders from the Center for Indian Country Development (CICD) at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Speakers will provide an overview of the updated regulations and changes that encourage bank activities in Native Land Areas (NLAs). The event will also offer an opportunity to explore ways tribal governments\, federally insured banks\, and other entities serving NLAs can take advantage of these new opportunities. \n\n\n\nLast month the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System\, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation\, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency approved a once-in-a-generation update of the regulations governing how they implement the CRA\, a federal law that requires banking regulators to encourage banks to help meet the credit needs of the communities in which they do business\, including low- and moderate-income (LMI) neighborhoods. The modernized CRA reflects feedback from Indian Country stakeholders and includes—for the first time—unique provisions to help address the credit needs of Native lands. \n\n\n\nCICD played a role in engaging stakeholder input on proposed CRA updates\, partnering with national Native organizations to host Indian Country-specific webinars and listening sessions and encourage comment on proposed changes. \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll be part of this important conversation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is a virtual video event

SUMMARY:Native CDFIs: Lending Insights\, Best Practices\, and Policy Considerations
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us July 11 for a conversation about the latest research on the unique lending practices of Native Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). This is the second event in a new webinar series from the Center for Indian Country Development (CICD): Cultivating Native Economies in the 21st Century. The series provides tribal leaders\, policymakers\, and practitioners with information they can use to strengthen and expand Indian Country economic development.   \n\n\n\nNative CDFIs are a vital source of credit and financial services in Indian Country. CICD is shedding light on the unique characteristics and contributions of Native CDFIs\, and best practices that strengthen their work and impact in Native communities.  \n\n\n\nOur July 11 webinar will feature recent research on Native CDFIs\, including studies of Native CDFIs’ success with character-based lending practices and use of client counseling as a way to support clients and mitigate loan risk. The webinar will also offer insights from recently completed interviews with Native CDFI leaders across Indian Country who shared their perspectives on community needs\, tailoring products and services to meet those needs\, and where there are opportunities for and barriers to funding.   \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll be part of this important conversation.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nMichou Kokodoko\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nAdrienne Smith\, Opportunity Finance Network \n\n\n\nPete Upton (Ponca Tribe of Nebraska)\, Native CDFI Network \n\n\n\nLakota Vogel (Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe)\, Four Brands Community Fund\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis Board of Directors \n\n\n\nLaura Wheeler\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:30-2:37 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome\, Overview\, and Introductions\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:37-2:57 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nLending by Native CDFIs: Insights and Best Practices\n\n\n\nPresenter: Laura Wheeler\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:57-3:40 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nModerated Practitioner Discussion\n\n\n\nModerator: Michou Kokodoko\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nAdrienne Smith\, Opportunity Finance Network\n\n\n\nPete Upton (Ponca Tribe of Nebraska)\, Native CDFI Network\n\n\n\nLakota Vogel (Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe)\, Four Bands Community Fund\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis Board of Directors\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:40-3:45 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks and Transition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:2023 Center for Indian Country Development Webinar Series: Opportunities and Barriers in Native Federal Contracting
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, the Center for Indian Country Development (CICD) at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis is hosting Cultivating Native Economies in the 21st Century\, a webinar series to provide tribal leaders\, policymakers\, and practitioners with information they can use to strengthen and expand Indian Country economic development. We invite you to join us June 21 for the inaugural event focused on federal contracting in Indian Country—its trends\, opportunities\, and barriers\, and its potential for driving revenue and employment that contribute to an economy that works for all. \n\n\n\nOver the last 40 years\, Alaska Native Corporations (ANCs)\, Native Hawaiian Organizations (NHOs)\, and federally recognized tribes have increasingly done business with the world’s largest procurer of goods and services: the U.S. government. Recent research from CICD found that all three Native entity types have seen growth in federal contracting revenue. Federal contracting is the primary source of revenue for ANCs and NHOs and the second-largest source for tribes\, following gaming. Despite this growth\, Native entities’ revenue from federal contracting remains a small share of all federal contracting revenue. \n\n\n\nOur June 21 webinar will explore opportunities for Native entities to advance economic prosperity through federal contracting—and barriers to accessing and succeeding with federal contracting. Subject matter experts from national Native organizations and the federal government will discuss federal contracting’s role in economic development. Representatives from ANCs\, NHOs\, and tribal enterprises will then share their experiences in the industry. \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll be part of this important conversation. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nMichael “Keawe” Anderson (Native Hawaiian)\, Nakupuna Companies \n\n\n\nJacqui Baldwin-LeClair\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nJeremy Berg\, Bodwé Professional Services\, Mno-Bmadsen \n\n\n\nJackson Brossy (Navajo Nation)\, U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Native American Affairs; CICD Leadership Council \n\n\n\nKatherine Carlton (Inupiat\, shareholder of Chugach Alaska Corporation)\, Chugach Education Services\, Inc.\, and Chugach Training and Educational Solutions\, LLC \n\n\n\nChris James (Cherokee)\, National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development; CICD Leadership Council \n\n\n\nCasey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nChad Marchand (Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation)\, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco \n\n\n\nElijah Moreno (Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nLillian Sparks Robinson (Rosebud Sioux Tribe)\, Native American Contractors Association; Wopila Consulting\, LLC; National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development board \n\n\n\nAlene Tchourumoff\, Community Development and Engagement\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:30-3:35 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome\, Overview\, and Introductions\n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nCasey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nAlene Tchourumoff\, Community Development and Engagement\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:35-3:37 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nOpening Blessing\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:37-3:50 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nFederal Contracting Overview\n\n\n\nPresenter: Elijah Moreno (Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:50-4:20 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nPanel: Federal Contracting and Tribal Economic Development\n\n\n\nModerator: Chad Marchand (Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation)\, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nJackson Brossy (Navajo Nation)\, U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Native American Affairs\n\n\n\nChris James (Cherokee)\, National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development\n\n\n\nLillian Sparks Robinson (Rosebud Sioux Tribe)\, Native American Contractors Association; Wopila Consulting\, LLC\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4:20-4:30 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks and Transition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4:30-4:57 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nNative Entity Panel: Entry\, Growth\, and Diversification in Federal Contracting \n\n\n\nModerator: Jacqui Baldwin-LeClair\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nKatherine Carlton (Inupiat\, shareholder of Chugach Alaska Corporation)\, Chugach Education Services\, Inc.\, and Chugach Training and Educational Solutions\, LLC\n\n\n\nMichael “Keawe” Anderson (Native Hawaiian)\, Nakupuna Companies\n\n\n\nJeremy Berg\, Bodwé Professional Services\, Mno-Bmadsen\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4:57-5:00 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks and Preview of Coming Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Successful Strategies in Tribal Enterprise Diversification
DESCRIPTION:This Center for Indian Country Development Policy (CICD) webinar will explore how diversification is a critical strategy for tribal economic resilience and stability. It is the second session in a series focused on understanding and addressing the strategic business decisions\, challenges\, and opportunities tribal enterprises face in today’s economic landscape. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nSince time immemorial\, tribal nations have innovated ways to provide for their communities’ well-being and prosperity. By necessity and through the exercise of self-determination\, tribes have successfully created revenue-generating tribal enterprises and corporations. These tribal business entities not only fund the provision of public goods and services but also increase the capacity of tribes to expand and stabilize their economies and communities. As tribal business enterprises grow in capacity\, size\, and diversity\, so does their role as important drivers of economic activity in Indian Country and beyond. \n\n\n\nJoin us to hear from tribal enterprise leaders who will discuss their experiences with diversification as a strategy for achieving long-term stability and economic resilience. Get a glimpse of economic-activity data across Indian Country and recent Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis-CICD research on tribal-business formation. Speakers will: \n\n\n\n\n\nProvide a high-level overview of the scope of tribal enterprise activities across Indian Country.\n\n\n\nShare the unique role tribal enterprises play in employment and revenue production for tribal communities and governments.\n\n\n\nProvide examples of tribal enterprise diversification challenges and successes.\n\n\n\nDemonstrate ways tribal businesses are an economic multiplier in both tribal and regional economies.\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nMatthew Gregg\, Senior Economist\, CICD\n\n\n\nAnnette Hamilton\, Chief Operating Officer\, Ho-Chunk Inc.\n\n\n\nChris James\, President and Chief Executive Officer\, National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development (Moderator)\n\n\n\nChad Klinck\, Chief Financial Officer\, Creek Indian Enterprise Development Authority\n\n\n\nJoe Nayquonabe\, Chief Executive Officer\, Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by
