SUMMARY:FedTalk: Meeting the Workforce Needs of In-Demand Industries in Ohio
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of innovative ways that places are expanding workforce pipelines for in-demand industries\, using the semiconductor and related industries in Ohio as an example. \n\n\n\nThe production of semiconductors\, including microchips which are used in a wide variety of electronic applications such as phones and computers\, is growing in the United States. Major investments have been made in states like Ohio\, Arizona\, Texas\, New York and Oregon. One expert will present findings from case studies about how local partners from private industry\, education and nonprofits in these places have come together to both boost productivity for employers and create promising career pathways for workers\, particularly workers without a college degree. \n\n\n\nThe panel will then share their perspectives on the unique challenges and opportunities in Ohio\, including what’s going well and where they see room for future innovation and growth. Specifically\, they will discuss the role of community colleges in developing workforce and training programs that are not tethered to one employer or one industry but designed to give workers transferable skills that can be used across multiple career pathways. What are some of the challenges unique to this state versus others? Where are there successes and where do challenges remain? \n\n\n\nPanelists will discuss: \n\n\n\n\n\nThe promise of the semiconductor industry\, and related industries\n\n\n\nThe dynamism of these industries and their changing needs\n\n\n\nWhat we know about effective models of cross-sector workforce partnerships both locally and nationally.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe presentation and panel discussion will be followed by Q&A. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nLavea Brachman\, Nonresident Senior Fellow\, Brookings Institution and Visiting Fellow\, University of College\, London\n\n\n\nAbbi Failla\, Vice President\, Business Operations\, EASE\n\n\n\nScott McLemore\, Member\, Executive Board\, Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation and Executive in Residence\, Columbus State Community College\n\n\n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\n\nKhaz Finley\, Outreach Manager\, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:District Dialogues - Unlocking Rural Potential: Identifying and Addressing the Barriers to Rural Investment
DESCRIPTION:At this District Dialogues event\, we’ll dig into the latest research and economic data\, hear local experts discuss the key factors impeding rural investment\, and identify policies and programs that may support economic outcomes and community development.  \n\n\n\nAs a regional Reserve Bank\, the Richmond Fed has a mission to strengthen the economy and the communities we serve. Some Fifth District rural communities and small towns are thriving\, but others are struggling\, held back by issues such as population and job loss\, lack of childcare and limited educational opportunities.  \n\n\n\nInterested in learning more? All community members are invited to join us Wednesday\, September 3 at 2:00 PM in person at West Virginia University or virtually via Zoom. SUMMARY:Fed Talk: A Conversation with Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland President Beth Hammack
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Beth Hammack\, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland\, to discuss the critical functions of Reserve Banks\, the state of the economy\, and ways Reserve Banks engage with the public. \n\n\n\nThis program offers a deeper understanding of the Federal Reserve’s role in the economy and the Fed’s impact on everyday life. \n\n\n\nThe event will be offered both virtually and in person at the Bank’s location in downtown Cleveland. Following the session\, in-person attendees may tour the Bank’s main building\, constructed in 1923. \n\n\n\nReserve Banks play a pivotal role in the US financial system. The Cleveland Fed touches everyone in the Fourth District by \n\n\n\n\n\nWorking with community and business partners to understand the economic landscape\n\n\n\nSupervising financial institutions\n\n\n\nPlaying a vital role in the nation’s payments system\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn her first year\, President Hammack has engaged with local community and business leaders in the Bank’s Fourth Federal Reserve District\, comprising Ohio and parts of Kentucky\, Pennsylvania\, and West Virginia. She then brings their insights into how the economy is working for their communities to the Federal Reserve’s policy-setting meeting in Washington DC. \n\n\n\nThere are 12 Reserve Banks across the country. Each serves a specific region\, and all Reserve Banks operate under the umbrella of the Federal Reserve System. \n\n\n\nThe primary functions of the Federal Reserve concern \n\n\n\n\n\nMonetary policy: Setting US monetary policy to promote maximum employment and stable prices in the US economy. The aim is to protect your standard of living.\n\n\n\nSupervision and regulation: Promoting the safety and soundness of individual financial institutions and monitoring their impact on the financial system. As a result\, you can be confident the bank you choose is operating in a safe and sound manner.\n\n\n\nPayments systems: Promoting a safe\, efficient\, and accessible system for US dollar transactions. This includes circulation of paper currency and coin. It also ensures the safe transport of transferred money and electronic bill payments from point A to point B.\n\n\n\nFinancial stability: Monitoring financial system risks. SUMMARY:The Importance of Home Equity in Wealth Building
DESCRIPTION:Owning a home is an important wealth-building tool. When a home’s value appreciates\, the equity that accrues can serve as a valuable resource for emergency expenses\, essential home repairs\, or income-enhancing investments like education or training. \n\n\n\nFor many Americans\, their home is their largest asset. Roughly 65 percent of households in the United States own their homes\, and housing continues to represent the largest share of household wealth. Yet research shows there are significant differences in how homeowners leverage their home equity. A Philadelphia Fed study revealed that wealth-building pathways through homeownership vary significantly by household and neighborhood. A key finding was that residents’ experiences with refinancing mortgages and debt varied widely. \n\n\n\nIn support of the Philadelphia Fed’s goal of promoting a sound financial system and a strong\, healthy economy\, this event aims to examine wealth building in low- and moderate-income (LMI) communities through the lens of home equity.  \n\n\n\nWhy Attend?\n\n\n\nJoin speakers\, panelists\, and your peers to examine the importance of home equity in wealth building\, explore a data-driven approach to identifying households vulnerable to the loss of home equity\, and advance solutions that preserve and protect home equity in LMI communities. \n\n\n\nPresentations will include “The Role of Home Equity in Wealth Building” and “Using Data to Prevent the Loss of Home Equity in New York City.” Panelists will also explore the importance of financial products and services that allow LMI homeowners to safely access home equity\, specifically in times of financial vulnerability. \n\n\n\nSpeakers will include: \n\n\n\n\n\nKen Benton\, Principal Consumer Regulations Specialist\, Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia;\n\n\n\nChristopher Cummins\, Staff Attorney\, Homeownership Rights\, SeniorLAW Center;\n\n\n\nMatthew Murphy\, Executive Director\, NYU Furman Center; \n\n\n\nSamantha Porter\, Senior Advisor\, Community Engagement\, Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia;\n\n\n\nMaureen Yap\, Vice President of Public Policy and Senior Counsel for Fair Lending\, National Fair Housing Alliance; and\n\n\n\nSisi Zhang\, Community Development Economic Advisor\, Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. \n\n\n\n\n\nWho Should Attend?\n\n\n\nProfessionals working in the housing and financial services sectors\, funders and nonprofits serving LMI communities\, and policymakers in the Third District are encouraged to attend.  \n\n\n\nThis event is complimentary\, but registration is required. Space is limited\, so reserve your spot now. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Pathways to Housing Affordability: Developing Coordinated Strategies to Increase Housing Inventory
DESCRIPTION:Access to homeownership and quality housing is vital to a strong U.S. economy. SUMMARY:2025 Institute Research Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Opportunity & Inclusive Growth Institute’s annual research conference showcases the range of frontier-style research that the Institute engages with and supports. Presenters\, discussants\, and attendees will engage in a broad scholarly exchange of ideas around presented papers. \n\n\n\nThe keynote speaker will be David Card\, the Class of 1950 Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and the 2021 winner of the Nobel prize in economics. Card pioneered the use of natural experiments to identify and measure causal effects. Much of his research has focused on the labor market effects of education\, immigration\, and minimum wages. Card has described his research as seeking to “understand why some people succeed and others fail\, and how their success or failure is related to the environment\, institutions and the people themselves.” Card was also the 1995 recipient of the John Bates Clark Medal\, the top honor for economists under 40. He served as president of the American Economic Association in 2021. \n\n\n\nAn Early Career Researchers’ Workshop will follow on November 14. That event\, which is by invitation\, focuses on developing research of scholars who have completed their Ph.D. in the last eight years (from 2017 to 2024). \n\n\n\nThe conference organizer is Amanda Michaud\, and this year’s program committee members are Taha Choukhmane\, Stephie Fried\, Daniel Hartley\, Amanda Michaud\, Serdar Ozkan\, Kosali Simon\, and Abigail Wozniak. \n\n\n\nThe program and photos from last year’s conference can be found here. \n\n\n\nThis registration is for the livestream only.
