SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: Amplifying Small Business Voices — New Findings from the Small Business Credit Survey
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is now available to watch on-demand. \n\n\n\nSmall businesses are on the road to recovery\, although hiring\, supply chain disruptions\, and rising costs remain persistent challenges. As small-business owners navigated these challenges through 2022\, pandemic-related funding programs ended\, and owners turned to other funding sources – including traditional financial institutions and their own savings. How are small businesses doing? How are they accessing credit\, and what gaps remain? Join us for a Connecting Communities webinar exploring new insights from the Federal Reserve Small Business Credit Survey (SBCS) 2023 Report on Employer Firms. \n\n\n\nThe Federal Reserve and a diverse group of nonprofits have administered the SBCS since 2016. The only survey of its kind\, the SBCS and reports developed from it help the Fed\, entities supporting small businesses\, lenders\, and policymakers better understand the credit experiences and challenges of small-business owners across the country. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJordan ManesPolicy Analyst\, Small Business Credit SurveyFederal Reserve Bank of Cleveland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLucas MiseraPolicy Analyst\, Small Business Credit SurveyFederal Reserve Bank of Cleveland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaria ThompsonOutreach Manager\, Small Business Credit SurveyFederal Reserve Bank of Cleveland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmily Wavering Corcoran Program Manager\, Small Business Credit SurveyFederal Reserve Bank of Cleveland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhitney FelderMarketing Communications SpecialistFed Communitiesmoderator \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Connecting Communities®\n\n\n\nReal people. SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: Two Sides of One Child Care Dilemma
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is now available to watch on-demand. \n\n\n\nAccess to quality early childhood education (ECE) is critical to the well-being of communities and the economy. The pandemic further exposed existing issues\, including how a lack of access to reliable and affordable childcare affects the parental workforce\, yet also how financing challenges strain provider profitability. \n\n\n\nDuring this session\, attendees will hear from the Federal Reserve about recent research that explores cost and affordability challenges\, especially for workers needing nontraditional hours of care and financial constraints on the provider side. SUMMARY:Fed Talk: Evolving to Win Workers: Talent Attraction and Retention of Lower-wage and Noncollege Workers Today
DESCRIPTION:There are no quick fixes or one-size-fits-all solutions to the post-pandemic hiring and retention challenges reported by employers\, particularly among lower wage workers or workers without a 4-year college degree. Learn about new research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia on employers’ hiring and retention strategies before and after the pandemic\, specifically focused on manufacturing and leisure/hospitality firms in the Northeast (PA\, NJ and DE). Then hear about local research conducted with firms and workers in Northeast Ohio\, and initiatives designed to strengthen the connection between lower wage workers and good jobs far into the future. Panelists will discuss: \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat strategies such as greater flexibility or higher pay have employers tried and which have proven most effective?\n\n\n\nHow might firms’ experience in Ohio differ from the Northeast or other regions of the U.S.? Are there observable differences by employer size or industry?\n\n\n\nWhat strategies seem to have the greatest staying power as the economic environment shifts?\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing the discussion\, panelists will take audience questions.   \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelist\n\n\n\nKeith Wardrip\, Senior Community Development Research Manager and Advisor\, Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia – Hiring and Retaining Lower-Wage and Noncollege Workers During the Pandemic \n\n\n\nBishara Addison\, Director\, Job Preparation\, Fund for Our Economic Future – Strengthening Workplaces \n\n\n\nMichael Baston\, President\, Cuyahoga County Community College \n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\nEmily Garr Pacetti\, Vice President and Community Affairs Officer\, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland \n\n\n\nPresented by

SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: A Community Approach to Disaster Recovery
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is now available to watch on-demand. \n\n\n\nUnderserved communities face significant challenges in achieving a full and equitable recovery after natural disasters. One reason is that these neighborhoods often lack access to services offered through disaster funds and the necessary insurance to protect their households.   \n\n\n\nThe Federal Reserve and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will share how FEMA programs can help low- to moderate-income communities respond to these challenges. FEMA will clarify the role of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) in recovery. Speakers will also discuss how collaboration among faith communities\, nonprofit organizations\, local businesses\, and economic partners through long-term recovery groups (LTRGs) is critical for rebuilding stronger communities.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNishesh ChaliseManager\, Community Development ResearchFederal Reserve Bank of St. Louis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMike PickerelVoluntary Agency Liaison and Mass Care SpecialistFEMA Region 7 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDan ShulmanSenior External Affairs SpecialistFEMA Region 5 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJames SinkRegional Flood Insurance Liaison FEMA Region 5 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhitney FelderMarketing Communications SpecialistFed Communitiesmoderator \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Connecting Communities®\n\n\n\nReal people. SUMMARY:2023 Center for Indian Country Development Webinar Series: Opportunities and Barriers in Native Federal Contracting
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, the Center for Indian Country Development (CICD) at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis is hosting Cultivating Native Economies in the 21st Century\, a webinar series to provide tribal leaders\, policymakers\, and practitioners with information they can use to strengthen and expand Indian Country economic development. We invite you to join us June 21 for the inaugural event focused on federal contracting in Indian Country—its trends\, opportunities\, and barriers\, and its potential for driving revenue and employment that contribute to an economy that works for all. \n\n\n\nOver the last 40 years\, Alaska Native Corporations (ANCs)\, Native Hawaiian Organizations (NHOs)\, and federally recognized tribes have increasingly done business with the world’s largest procurer of goods and services: the U.S. government. Recent research from CICD found that all three Native entity types have seen growth in federal contracting revenue. Federal contracting is the primary source of revenue for ANCs and NHOs and the second-largest source for tribes\, following gaming. Despite this growth\, Native entities’ revenue from federal contracting remains a small share of all federal contracting revenue. \n\n\n\nOur June 21 webinar will explore opportunities for Native entities to advance economic prosperity through federal contracting—and barriers to accessing and succeeding with federal contracting. Subject matter experts from national Native organizations and the federal government will discuss federal contracting’s role in economic development. Representatives from ANCs\, NHOs\, and tribal enterprises will then share their experiences in the industry. \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll be part of this important conversation. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nMichael “Keawe” Anderson (Native Hawaiian)\, Nakupuna Companies \n\n\n\nJacqui Baldwin-LeClair\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nJeremy Berg\, Bodwé Professional Services\, Mno-Bmadsen \n\n\n\nJackson Brossy (Navajo Nation)\, U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Native American Affairs; CICD Leadership Council \n\n\n\nKatherine Carlton (Inupiat\, shareholder of Chugach Alaska Corporation)\, Chugach Education Services\, Inc.\, and Chugach Training and Educational Solutions\, LLC \n\n\n\nChris James (Cherokee)\, National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development; CICD Leadership Council \n\n\n\nCasey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nChad Marchand (Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation)\, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco \n\n\n\nElijah Moreno (Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nLillian Sparks Robinson (Rosebud Sioux Tribe)\, Native American Contractors Association; Wopila Consulting\, LLC; National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development board \n\n\n\nAlene Tchourumoff\, Community Development and Engagement\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:30-3:35 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome\, Overview\, and Introductions\n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nCasey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nAlene Tchourumoff\, Community Development and Engagement\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:35-3:37 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nOpening Blessing\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:37-3:50 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nFederal Contracting Overview\n\n\n\nPresenter: Elijah Moreno (Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:50-4:20 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nPanel: Federal Contracting and Tribal Economic Development\n\n\n\nModerator: Chad Marchand (Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation)\, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nJackson Brossy (Navajo Nation)\, U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Native American Affairs\n\n\n\nChris James (Cherokee)\, National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development\n\n\n\nLillian Sparks Robinson (Rosebud Sioux Tribe)\, Native American Contractors Association; Wopila Consulting\, LLC\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4:20-4:30 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks and Transition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4:30-4:57 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nNative Entity Panel: Entry\, Growth\, and Diversification in Federal Contracting \n\n\n\nModerator: Jacqui Baldwin-LeClair\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nKatherine Carlton (Inupiat\, shareholder of Chugach Alaska Corporation)\, Chugach Education Services\, Inc.\, and Chugach Training and Educational Solutions\, LLC\n\n\n\nMichael “Keawe” Anderson (Native Hawaiian)\, Nakupuna Companies\n\n\n\nJeremy Berg\, Bodwé Professional Services\, Mno-Bmadsen\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4:57-5:00 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks and Preview of Coming Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:College as an Investment: Costs\, Payoffs\, and Financing
DESCRIPTION:A college education is an important factor in determining future earnings\, but the climbing costs of higher education in America have made paying for college more challenging in recent decades. Rising student debt was already a concern prior to Covid-19\, but the widespread economic hardship brought on by the pandemic\, highlighted existing inequities in higher education accessibility and financing. As the cost of college has steadily increased over the past 30 years\, so has the need for student loans and other forms of financial aid.  \n\n\n\nJoin us for the Economic Mobility Project’s next virtual event\, College as an Investment: Costs\, Payoffs\, and Financing\, on Tuesday\, July 11\, 2023\, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm CT (12:00 pm to 1:30 pm ET)\, when we will share new research and explore policies and challenges impacting higher education accessibility and student loan financing for millions of American households. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured speakers\n\n\n\nThe event will feature opening remarks from Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee\, presentations by the Chicago Fed’s Lisa Barrow\, senior economist and economic advisor\, and Gene Amromin\, vice president and director of financial research. The presentations will be followed by a roundtable discussion with Makola Abdullah\, president of Virginia State University; Jason Delisle\, nonresident senior fellow in the Center on Education Data and Policy at the Urban Institute; and Lesley J. SUMMARY:FedTalk: Benefits Cliff: How It’s Impacting Workers\, Employers\, and the Economy
DESCRIPTION:Many lower-wage workers are familiar with the benefits cliff. This cliff occurs when an increase in a worker’s earned income causes a disproportionately greater loss of critical public assistance\, from housing to childcare and healthcare benefits. A cliff can be prompted by a modest raise or a worker taking a new job with higher pay\, or by someone rejoining the workforce after some time away. Sometimes the cliffs can be anticipated; often they are difficult to discern until a worker gets notice that they’ve lost a key benefit. It can be a disincentive to workers taking a job or wanting to advance in their career. \n\n\n\nIn the virtual FedTalk session on July 31\, you’ll learn how the benefits cliff impacts individuals and families\, employers\, policymaking\, and the economy overall. You’ll also learn about how some community organizations are working with state agencies and policymakers to make progress on the benefits cliff issue.
