SUMMARY:Exploring Flood Risk for New York City Renters\, Homeowners\, and Communities of Color
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, September 5\, 2024\, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York will host a virtual event exploring findings from two papers on flood risk to low-and-moderate income households in New York City. The papers\, released earlier this year by the Community Development team\, found that approximately one in ten low- to moderate-income people\, immigrants\, and racial and ethnic minorities in New York City live in a flood-prone census tract. The event will detail which New York City neighborhoods are most exposed to flood risk. Speakers will also discuss the financial impact of flooding on residents\, including property loss and damage\, lost labor hours\, and health costs. \n\n\n\nThis event will be of interest to researchers\, nonprofits\, community bankers\, policymakers\, and small business owners. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Resources\n\n\n\nFlood Risk and Basement Housing in New York City: The Impact of Extreme Weather on Vulnerable Housing Stock \n\n\n\nFlooding Impacts on Household Finances: Insights from Focus Groups in New York City \n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: Economic Insights from Lower-Income Communities: Findings from the 2024 Community Perspectives Survey
DESCRIPTION:Watch on demand. \n\n\n\nIn April 2024\, the Federal Reserve conducted the Community Perspectives Survey\, which focuses on economic conditions in low- to moderate-income (LMI) communities and the health of organizations serving them. Overall\, the survey found poor conditions for economic mobility in LMI communities. Access to housing and increasing cost of goods and services were among the top challenges. Respondents did note that continued availability of jobs was contributing positively to economic mobility. \n\n\n\nJoin Federal Reserve Staff and leaders from national community development organizations for a discussion about the findings and how these organizations continue to provide vital services to LMI communities and play a part in promoting economic resilience and mobility.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichael ButchkoVice President of Business IntelligenceNeighborWorks \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVioleta GutkowskiAssociate Economist Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMelissa JohnsonManaging Director of State StrategiesNational Skills Coalition \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrank WoodruffExecutive DirectorCommunity Opportunity Alliance \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSydney DiavuaAssistant Vice President\, Community DevelopmentFederal Reserve Bank of St. Louismoderator \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Connecting Communities®\n\n\n\nReal people. SUMMARY:Pathways to Progress: Strengthening West Tennessee’s Young Adult Workforce
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, the St. Louis Fed’s Community Development team held 16 roundtables across the Eighth District to better understand the needs of our region’s workforce. Leaders in business\, education and community development from across eastern Arkansas\, West Tennessee and the Mississippi Delta shared their insights. Join us in person to learn more about those insights and approaches for shifting systemic and emergent structural barriers to labor force participation in the region. \n\n\n\nIn 2022\, the Greater Memphis area saw the largest decline in labor force across Tennessee\, and that decline has continued over the last two years\, according to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. In addition to rising unemployment\, Tennessee has the seventh highest percentage of disconnected youth in the U.S. meaning they are neither working nor in school. \n\n\n\nAt this event\, you’ll hear from business and industry leaders\, community organizations and educational partners from across West Tennessee who have deployed successful programs and strategies for working together to expand workforce opportunities for vulnerable populations.  \n\n\n\nYou will have an opportunity during registration to submit questions in advance of the event’s Q&A session.  \n\n\n\nThere is no charge to attend this event\, but registration by Sept. 3 is required. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact the St. Louis Fed’s Community Development staff at communitydevelopment@stls.frb.org. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nVinessa Brown\, Lifeline to SuccessWorks\n\n\n\nAmber Covington\, Workforce Development Board—Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce\n\n\n\nMatthew Gould\, The Hospitality Hub\n\n\n\nLatasha Harris\, Memphis Medical District Collaborative\n\n\n\nDexter McKinney\, Methodist Hospital\n\n\n\nSydney Diavua\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis\n\n\n\nMike Eggleston\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis\n\n\n\nNorman Jones\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis – Memphis Zone\n\n\n\nDouglas Scarboro\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis\n\n\n\nNicole Summers-Gabr\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:30 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nBreakfast and Networking\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n8:35 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome\n\n\n\nDouglas Scarboro\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis—Memphis Branch\, and Tracey Hall\, Southwest Tennessee Community College \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n8:50 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nFindings and Insights on the Labor Market for Young Adults in West Tennessee\n\n\n\nSydney Diavua and Nicole Summers-Gabr\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n9:10 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nFireside Chat: Centering Young Adults in Workforce Entry and Development\n\n\n\nMatt Gould\, The Hospitality Hub\, and Norman Jones III\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n9:30 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nPanel Discussion and Q & A\n\n\n\nLocal community leaders unpacking workforce barriers and best practices for young adults \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10:15 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:The Broadband Affordability Burden: Exploring Research and Policies for Affordable High-Speed Internet for All
DESCRIPTION:The broadband affordability gap across households in the U.S. is one of the primary obstacles to accessing the internet. Of the 28.2 million U.S. households that do not have high-speed broadband\, 18 million are offline because they cannot afford the cost of an at-home internet connection. According to a Benton Institute survey\, 43 percent of low-income households are subscription vulnerable\, meaning they have lost service because of difficulty paying broadband bills\, find it very difficult to afford service\, or live at or near the poverty line.    \n\n\n\nThis webinar features research on the cost and affordability of high-speed broadband\, especially for low-and-moderate income households. It looks at the household factors associated with the broadband cost burden\, the implications of the end of the Affordable Connectivity Program\, and strategies for making broadband affordable for all.  \n\n\n\nSpace is limited.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 2024 Digital Inclusion Webinar Series\n\n\n\nJoin us during Digital Inclusion Week for a series of webinars highlighting the latest research on digital inclusion. SUMMARY:Evaluating Digital Skills: Data\, Measurement Tools\, and Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Demand for digital skills in the labor market is high across occupational sectors. Research from the National Skills Coalition and Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta found that 92 percent of jobs analyzed required digital skills\, yet a third of workers do not have the digital skills needed for these roles. This digital skill gap disproportionately impacts lower-income individuals\, limiting career options and opportunities for economic mobility.    \n\n\n\nThis webinar highlights research on evaluating digital skill levels and the implications for workforce participation. DESCRIPTION:We will wrap up the Digital Inclusion Research webinar series with a roundtable discussion to further explore the session topics and network. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 2024 Digital Inclusion Webinar Series\n\n\n\nJoin us during Digital Inclusion Week for a series of webinars highlighting the latest research on digital inclusion. Each webinar focuses on a timely topic\, elevating policy-driven scholarship. The presentations will feature emerging methodologies\, best practices and needs for future research.   \n\n\n\nAcademics\, researchers\, policymakers\, and community development practitioners are encouraged to register for one or more of the sessions:   \n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing the Dollars: Measuring the Efficacy of Federal Broadband Funding (October 8\, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm CT)\n\n\n\nThe Broadband Affordability Burden: Exploring Research and Policies for Affordable High-Speed Internet for All (October 9\, 10:00 am – 11:30 am CT)\n\n\n\nEvaluating Digital Skills: Data\, Measurement Tools\, and Outcomes (October 10\, 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm CT)\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy this matters  \n\n\n\nAccess to the internet is vital to economic inclusion. However\, many Americans lack access to affordable home broadband or the skills and devices needed to use it.   \n\n\n\nRecent federal funding programs provide a singular opportunity to address these issues. This has driven an interest in relevant research on digital inclusion among policymakers and practitioners\, as well as academics and researchers. The heightened attention has also revealed research gaps in some areas.   \n\n\n\nAbout this series  \n\n\n\nThis webinar series is a follow-up to the Digital Inclusion Research Forum hosted by the Federal Reserve Banks of Atlanta\, Dallas\, Kansas City and Philadelphia in 2023.   \n\n\n\nThe forum serves as a platform to share digital inclusion research and provide context for practitioners to understand and apply research to their work. It also highlights opportunities for new research.   \n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Understanding Racial Disparities in Lifetime Earnings and Life Expectancy
DESCRIPTION:In economic research\, income and wealth inequality are often measured using repeated cross-sections of data\, but these measures provide an incomplete description of inequality when there are differences in life expectancy between demographic groups. On Thursday\, November 14\, 2024\, at 11:00 am CT\, join the Economic Mobility Project of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago for a virtual event\, Understanding Racial Disparities in Lifetime Earnings and Life Expectancy. Chicago Fed economist Ezra Karger will share his research\, which uses census data to provide the first long-run estimates of lifetime earnings by race in the United States. His work explores the importance of life expectancy in the measurement of Black-White income inequality and how and why this ratio has experienced dramatic shifts over the past 100 years. \n\n\n\nThe research presentation will be followed by a panel of experts. William Darity Jr.\, Sita Nataraj Slavov\, Damon Jones\, and Nicholas J. Hill will discuss historical changes in racial disparities in income and life expectancy\, moderated by Jonnelle Marte\, Federal Reserve and economics reporter with Bloomberg News. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation
