Join Illenin Kondo\, senior research economist at the Minneapolis Fed’s Opportunity & Inclusive Growth Institute\, for answers to these questions and more in a virtual conversation on Monday\, September 30\, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nPrior to joining the Institute\, Illenin was an assistant professor of economics at the University of Notre Dame. He was also a senior economist with the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in the Trade and Financial Studies section before his time at the University of Notre Dame. Illenin also taught at the Johns Hopkins University. DESCRIPTION:The broadband affordability gap across households in the U.S. is one of the primary obstacles to accessing the internet. Of the 28.2 million U.S. households that do not have high-speed broadband\, 18 million are offline because they cannot afford the cost of an at-home internet connection. According to a Benton Institute survey\, 43 percent of low-income households are subscription vulnerable\, meaning they have lost service because of difficulty paying broadband bills\, find it very difficult to afford service\, or live at or near the poverty line.    \n\n\n\nThis webinar features research on the cost and affordability of high-speed broadband\, especially for low-and-moderate income households. DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, at a conference in Grand Rapids\, MI\, the Chicago Fed helped create conversations on the challenges and opportunities rural economic development faces. Now\, we’d like to start building on those conversations with a deeper discussion on how rural communities are attracting labor with the help of creative zoning practices and housing policies\, as well as ways to mitigate the risks of economic development. Come learn about how communities are reimagining land use and collaborating with their neighbors on place-making initiatives that not only attract labor but also the employment opportunities that come with having a sufficient workforce in a region. Chicago Fed economist Ezra Karger will share his research\, which uses census data to provide the first long-run estimates of lifetime earnings by race in the United States. SUMMARY:Survey of Community College Outcomes: 2024 Results and the Future of the Survey
DESCRIPTION:Community colleges play a major role in workforce and economic development\, and at the Richmond Fed\, we’re committed to understanding the economic impacts that important institutions like these have across the Fifth District. Unfortunately\, existing data collected across states do not fully describe the range of outcomes achieved by community college students. Individual community colleges use many metrics to gauge their success\, but these can vary from school to school\, and from state to state\, which makes it hard to compare across institutions and track outcomes consistently over time. \n\n\n\nThe Richmond Fed’s Survey of Community College Outcomes (SCCO) is a quantitative\, consistent system for measuring community college outcomes that provides a fuller view of what success looks like for community college students. This includes part-time students\, those who have attended college previously and other non-traditional students — and will allow for better analysis on how student success contributes to local workforce and economic development.
