SUMMARY:College as an Investment: Costs\, Payoffs\, and Financing
DESCRIPTION:A college education is an important factor in determining future earnings\, but the climbing costs of higher education in America have made paying for college more challenging in recent decades. Rising student debt was already a concern prior to Covid-19\, but the widespread economic hardship brought on by the pandemic\, highlighted existing inequities in higher education accessibility and financing. As the cost of college has steadily increased over the past 30 years\, so has the need for student loans and other forms of financial aid.  \n\n\n\nJoin us for the Economic Mobility Project’s next virtual event\, College as an Investment: Costs\, Payoffs\, and Financing\, on Tuesday\, July 11\, 2023\, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm CT (12:00 pm to 1:30 pm ET)\, when we will share new research and explore policies and challenges impacting higher education accessibility and student loan financing for millions of American households. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured speakers\n\n\n\nThe event will feature opening remarks from Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee\, presentations by the Chicago Fed’s Lisa Barrow\, senior economist and economic advisor\, and Gene Amromin\, vice president and director of financial research. The presentations will be followed by a roundtable discussion with Makola Abdullah\, president of Virginia State University; Jason Delisle\, nonresident senior fellow in the Center on Education Data and Policy at the Urban Institute; and Lesley J. Turner\, associate professor of public policy at the University of Chicago\, Harris School of Public Policy. The discussion will be moderated by Stacey Vanek Smith\, cohost of NPR’s The Indicator from Planet Money. \n\n\n\nPresented by

DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us July 11 for a conversation about the latest research on the unique lending practices of Native Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). This is the second event in a new webinar series from the Center for Indian Country Development (CICD): Cultivating Native Economies in the 21st Century. SUMMARY:Rural Community Action Assembly: Broadband Deployment and Community Readiness
DESCRIPTION:A historic amount of federal funding for broadband infrastructure is on the way to each state across the country. Rural communities in our region are starting to assess their readiness to get and absorb this capital. Local leaders must make sure they’re prepared to make the most of this funding for their communities.  \n\n\n\nThis event is for rural economic or workforce development corporations\, nonprofits working with low- and moderate-income communities\, and other rural or countywide decision makers who are looking to obtain — or want to know more about — this funding. Attendees will gain insights on the forthcoming Broadband Equity\, Access\, and Deployment Act and the Digital Equity Act and how to weave them into a comprehensive economic development strategy. Presentations will include recent data on access in rural Pennsylvania and how to increase capacity for applying for grants. Additionally\, we’ll dive into the roles of small internet service providers\, and others in community efforts toward digital inclusion. Participation is free for this virtual event but registration is required. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers include\n\n\n\n\n\nChristopher Ali\, Pioneers Chair in Telecommunications\, Penn State University\n\n\n\nRoberto Gallardo\, Director\, Purdue Center for Regional Development\n\n\n\nLaShawn Williamson\, Founder and CEO\, Wave 7 Communications\, LLC\n\n\n\nMarty Qually\, County Commissioner\, Adams County (PA) \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nThis virtual meeting is a continuation of the Rural Community Action Assemblies. SUMMARY:FedTalk: Benefits Cliff: How It’s Impacting Workers\, Employers\, and the Economy
DESCRIPTION:Many lower-wage workers are familiar with the benefits cliff. This cliff occurs when an increase in a worker’s earned income causes a disproportionately greater loss of critical public assistance\, from housing to childcare and healthcare benefits. A cliff can be prompted by a modest raise or a worker taking a new job with higher pay\, or by someone rejoining the workforce after some time away. Sometimes the cliffs can be anticipated; often they are difficult to discern until a worker gets notice that they’ve lost a key benefit. It can be a disincentive to workers taking a job or wanting to advance in their career. \n\n\n\nIn the virtual FedTalk session on July 31\, you’ll learn how the benefits cliff impacts individuals and families\, employers\, policymaking\, and the economy overall. You’ll also learn about how some community organizations are working with state agencies and policymakers to make progress on the benefits cliff issue. Join us and bring your questions for this insightful conversation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelists\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScott FastWorkforce and Technology StrategistInnovate+Educate \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnne KandilisDirectorSpringfield WORKS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarielle LovecchioDirectorTennessee Alliance for Economic Mobility \n\n\n\n\n\nModerators\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrittany BirkenChief Economic Development Director and Principal AdviserFederal Reserve Bank of Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGabriella ChiarenzaCommunications AdvisorFed Communities \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit the event site for speaker bios > \n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: Shifting Perspectives and Expectations on Employment
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is now available to watch on-demand. \n\n\n\nWorkers are key to the country’s economic success. Their voices are critical to conversations about understanding the labor market. Last year\, the Federal Reserve held virtual focus groups across the US to find out how workers in lower-wage roles and job seekers with less than a bachelor’s degree experienced the labor market during the pandemic. \n\n\n\nJoin us for insights about how many workers are reshaping the workforce. The discussion will address enhanced expectations of job quality and how workers are using skill development and self-investment to change their economic opportunities. \n\n\n\nDuring the event\, Federal Reserve Presidents Raphael Bostic from the Atlanta Fed and Patrick T. Harker from the Philadelphia Fed will share their perspectives about this important topic. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRaphael BosticPresident and Chief Executive OfficerFederal Reserve Bank of Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPatrick T. SUMMARY:Conversations on Equity: Women\, Workforce and the Wage Gap
DESCRIPTION:The last 75 years ushered in a convergence in the labor force participation of men and women. In 1948\, only 33% of women participated in the labor force\, compared with 87% of men. Fast-forward to 2022\, when 57% of women and 69% of men participated in the labor force. Despite this convergence\, pay gaps and other structural barriers still prevent women from benefitting from their labor more fully. The next event in the St. Louis Fed’s Conversations on Equity series will explore barriers to participation and more equitable wages that women face in the labor market. This in-person event is free to attend but registration is required by August 16\, 2023. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nThis event will feature a discussion with William M. SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: How CDFIs are faring – Insights from the Fed’s 2023 CDFI Survey
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is now available to watch on-demand. \n\n\n\nCommunity Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) provide financial products and services to underserved markets where it may be difficult to access what traditional financial institutions offer. Every other year\, the Fed conducts a survey of CDFIs to better understand the barriers and opportunities that they face. This year’s survey sought input on a variety of topics that range from demand for products and product innovation. \n\n\n\nThis year\, 453 institutions responded to the Fed’s 2023 CDFI Survey. Learn about key findings from the survey and thoughts about the road ahead for CDFIs. During the survey presentation\, speakers will discuss demand for CDFIs’ products and services\, challenges to meeting demand—including lending capital—and innovations in products and practices. Plus\, learn about CDFIs’ approaches to tracking outcomes—and their limitations. Then\, speakers will discuss how the survey results help inform future Fed research initiatives. Speakers will share Fed research on CDFIs’ use of secondary markets and financial leverage. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSurekha CarpenterResearch AnalystFederal Reserve Bank of Richmond \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharlene “Charly” van DijkSenior Advisor\, Community Economic DevelopmentFederal Reserve Bank of Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJonathan KivellDirector of Community InvestmentsFederal Reserve Bank of New York \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaria Carmelita RectoCommunity Development SpecialistFederal Reserve Bank of New York \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJacob ScottCommunity Development AnalystFederal Reserve Bank of New York \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJennie BlizzardCommunications AdvisorFed Communitiesmoderator \n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Connecting Communities®\n\n\n\nReal people. SUMMARY:Fueling an Inclusive Economy: The Role of Employment Social Enterprises
DESCRIPTION:Despite recent record lows in unemployment\, many Americans are on the sidelines of the economy due to employment barriers like experiences with homelessness or justice system involvement. Employment social enterprises are businesses that reveal and reinforce the talent of these individuals\, so the economy can benefit from their skills and contributions. \n\n\n\nThe employment social enterprise model is an evidence-based solution that successfully transitions people into the workforce\, while generating earned revenue to cover their programmatic costs. However\, employment social enterprises\, especially those led by entrepreneurs that have been historically or systemically marginalized\, have faced barriers in accessing start-up and growth capital. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a discussion about how employment social enterprises remove barriers to employment for Americans who are traditionally sidelined from the labor market. At this event\, participants will: \n\n\n\n\n\nExplore different models and business practices for connecting this untapped sector of the workforce with stable\, quality jobs that benefit employers\, individuals\, and broader communities.\n\n\n\n\n\nHear from experts about strategies aimed at building an inclusive economy that works for everyone.\n\n\n\n\n\nReview research from the Federal Reserve System’s Worker Voices Project\, which aims to provide a more holistic understanding of workers’ recent experiences in the labor market.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event offering in-person and virtual attendance options. SUMMARY:Increasing Equitable Access to Affordable Housing Finance: Early Learnings from CDFI Programs for Housing Developers of Color
DESCRIPTION:Equitable access to financial services is vital to a strong and inclusive economy. In response to well-documented disparities and systemic barriers in access to capital\, CDFIs across the country have been undertaking efforts to connect mission-driven capital to communities of color. SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: Navigating Benefits Cliffs - Barriers and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is now available to watch on-demand. \n\n\n\nBenefits cliffs create economic challenges for workers and employers alike. A benefits cliff may occur when an increase in income—from working more hours\, getting a raise\, or taking a new position—pushes a worker above the income eligibility limit for one or more public assistance programs\, and the loss of assistance is greater than the value of the increase. This forces people to choose between their family’s immediate financial best interest and their own longer-term wage growth and career advancement. These cliffs can also stymie employers seeking to hire workers and develop their skills through internal career pathway opportunities. \n\n\n\nJoin us October 12th for a dynamic session with experts exploring this economic challenge from the perspective of employers\, the Federal Reserve\, and community leaders who help families navigate public assistance programs and plan for career advancement opportunities. You’ll learn about tools developed by the Atlanta Fed that can identify and inform mitigation strategies. You’ll also hear about innovation pilots including Florida\, North Carolina\, Tennessee\, and Washington D.C. that may inform the future efforts of state and community leaders working to develop solutions to the benefits cliff. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrittany Birken\, PhDDirector and Principal AdvisorFederal Reserve Bank of Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKwain BryantManager\, Career NavigationGoodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTalethia EdwardsFamily Advocate & Coalition BuilderThe H.A.N.D. SUMMARY:2023 Center for Indian Country Development Webinar Series: Nuts\, Bolts\, and Cables: Opportunities in Tribal Broadband
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us October 16 for a conversation about the research on tribal broadband and opportunities for tribes to improve their communities’ Internet access. This is the third event in the Center for Indian Country Development’s (CICD’s) 2023 webinar series: Cultivating Native Economies in the 21st Century. The series provides tribal leaders\, policymakers\, and practitioners with information they can use to strengthen and expand Indian Country economic prosperity. \n\n\n\nInternet access connects communities to economic opportunity and vital services. Research from CICD has found that tribal areas have inadequate access to high-speed Internet\, known as broadband. Today\, new funding and partnership possibilities are opening opportunities for tribes to improve their communities’ digital infrastructure. Seizing these opportunities requires accurate\, comprehensive data on the state of broadband across Indian Country. \n\n\n\nOur October 16 webinar will feature research on the tribal digital divide and information on modern broadband policies and programs. Tribal broadband practitioners and federal policymakers will discuss data challenges as well as opportunities for tribal governments to advance their service networks. Presenters and panelists will also explore the connection between tribes’ ability to make decisions about their digital infrastructure and tribal sovereignty. Participants will have the opportunity to share questions as part of a live question-and-answer session. \n\n\n\nThe event is held in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and the American Indian Policy Institute at Arizona State University. \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll be part of this important conversation. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nGeoffrey Blackwell (Muscogee\, Chickasaw\, Choctaw\, and Omaha)\, Co-Chair\, Economic\, Finance\, and Community Development Committee and Technology and Telecommunications Subcommittee\, National Congress of American Indians \n\n\n\nValerie Fast Horse (Coeur d’Alene Tribe)\, Coeur d’Alene Tribe \n\n\n\nCasey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nTraci Morris (Chickasaw)\, American Indian Policy Institute\, Arizona State University \n\n\n\nMatthew Rantanen (Cree)\, Southern California Tribal Chairmen’s Association and Tribal Delight Village \n\n\n\nSteven Shepelwich\, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City \n\n\n\nH Trostle (Cherokee Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nDanae Wilson (Nez Perce)\, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:00-2:10 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome and Introductory Remarks\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Casey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:10-2:15 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nOpening Blessing\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:15-2:20 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nTribal Broadband History and Current Funding\n\n\n\nPresenter: H Trostle (Cherokee Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:50-4:20 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nPanel: Federal Contracting and Tribal Economic Development\n\n\n\nModerator: H Trostle (Cherokee Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nGeoffrey Blackwell (Muscogee\, Chickasaw\, Choctaw\, and Omaha)\, National Congress of American Indians\n\n\n\nTraci Morris (Chickasaw)\, American Indian Policy Institute\, Arizona State University\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:45-3:10 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nNuts\, Bolts\, and Cables of Network Sovereignty\n\n\n\nModerator: Steven Shepelwich\,  Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nValerie Fast Horse (Coeur d’Alene Tribe)\, Coeur d’Alene Tribe\n\n\n\nMatthew Rantan (Cree)\, Southern California Tribal Chairmen’s Association and Tribal Digital Village\n\n\n\nDanae Wilson (Nez Perce)\, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:10-3:25 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nAudience Q&A\n\n\n\nModerator: H Trostle (Cherokee Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:25-3:30 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks and Thank You\n\n\n\nSpeaker: H Trostle (Cherokee Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:FedTalk: What Is Wealth Distribution and Why Does It Matter?
DESCRIPTION:How a country’s wealth is divided among its population\, also called wealth distribution\, is a product of multiple factors including income\, household savings\, and asset returns. Recent measures reveal the wealthiest 1 percent of American households typically holds more than 30 percent of the country’s wealth – an imbalance that is significant and of particular interest to economists. \n\n\n\nWhat causes wealth inequality and why does wealth distribution matter to economists and policymakers? \n\n\n\nJoin the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland for a conversation about new ways to study wealth distribution and a question-and-answer session about the impact of wealth distribution and inequality in the United States. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation
