SUMMARY:Addressing Obstacles to Opportunity for Foreign-Born Workers
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us November 6 for a virtual convening about barriers foreign-born workers may experience in the labor market and how states are responding. To open the event\, our staff will present Minneapolis Fed research on how occupational licensing can limit full labor force participation for foreign-born workers. We will also introduce our new Occupational Licensing Dashboard\, which provides insight into the landscape of worker licensure in the United States. DESCRIPTION:The Bay Area has experienced substantial changes in the geographic location and growth of low-income communities including low-income communities of color\, particularly into the outer regions such as Solano County\, eastern Contra Costa County\, and southern Santa Clara County. This is the third event in the Center for Indian Country Development’s (CICD’s) 2023 webinar series: Cultivating Native Economies in the 21st Century. The series provides tribal leaders\, policymakers\, and practitioners with information they can use to strengthen and expand Indian Country economic prosperity. \n\n\n\nInternet access connects communities to economic opportunity and vital services. Research from CICD has found that tribal areas have inadequate access to high-speed Internet\, known as broadband. Today\, new funding and partnership possibilities are opening opportunities for tribes to improve their communities’ digital infrastructure. Seizing these opportunities requires accurate\, comprehensive data on the state of broadband across Indian Country. \n\n\n\nOur October 16 webinar will feature research on the tribal digital divide and information on modern broadband policies and programs. DESCRIPTION:The last 75 years ushered in a convergence in the labor force participation of men and women. In 1948\, only 33% of women participated in the labor force\, compared with 87% of men. Fast-forward to 2022\, when 57% of women and 69% of men participated in the labor force. Despite this convergence\, pay gaps and other structural barriers still prevent women from benefitting from their labor more fully. The next event in the St. Louis Fed’s Conversations on Equity series will explore barriers to participation and more equitable wages that women face in the labor market. SUMMARY:FedTalk: Benefits Cliff: How It’s Impacting Workers\, Employers\, and the Economy
DESCRIPTION:Many lower-wage workers are familiar with the benefits cliff. This cliff occurs when an increase in a worker’s earned income causes a disproportionately greater loss of critical public assistance\, from housing to childcare and healthcare benefits. A cliff can be prompted by a modest raise or a worker taking a new job with higher pay\, or by someone rejoining the workforce after some time away. Sometimes the cliffs can be anticipated; often they are difficult to discern until a worker gets notice that they’ve lost a key benefit.
