SUMMARY:College as an Investment: Costs\, Payoffs\, and Financing
DESCRIPTION:A college education is an important factor in determining future earnings\, but the climbing costs of higher education in America have made paying for college more challenging in recent decades. Rising student debt was already a concern prior to Covid-19\, but the widespread economic hardship brought on by the pandemic\, highlighted existing inequities in higher education accessibility and financing. As the cost of college has steadily increased over the past 30 years\, so has the need for student loans and other forms of financial aid.  \n\n\n\nJoin us for the Economic Mobility Project’s next virtual event\, College as an Investment: Costs\, Payoffs\, and Financing\, on Tuesday\, July 11\, 2023\, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm CT (12:00 pm to 1:30 pm ET)\, when we will share new research and explore policies and challenges impacting higher education accessibility and student loan financing for millions of American households. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured speakers\n\n\n\nThe event will feature opening remarks from Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee\, presentations by the Chicago Fed’s Lisa Barrow\, senior economist and economic advisor\, and Gene Amromin\, vice president and director of financial research. The presentations will be followed by a roundtable discussion with Makola Abdullah\, president of Virginia State University; Jason Delisle\, nonresident senior fellow in the Center on Education Data and Policy at the Urban Institute; and Lesley J. Turner\, associate professor of public policy at the University of Chicago\, Harris School of Public Policy. The discussion will be moderated by Stacey Vanek Smith\, cohost of NPR’s The Indicator from Planet Money. \n\n\n\nPresented by

SUMMARY:Native CDFIs: Lending Insights\, Best Practices\, and Policy Considerations
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us July 11 for a conversation about the latest research on the unique lending practices of Native Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). This is the second event in a new webinar series from the Center for Indian Country Development (CICD): Cultivating Native Economies in the 21st Century. The series provides tribal leaders\, policymakers\, and practitioners with information they can use to strengthen and expand Indian Country economic development.   \n\n\n\nNative CDFIs are a vital source of credit and financial services in Indian Country. CICD is shedding light on the unique characteristics and contributions of Native CDFIs\, and best practices that strengthen their work and impact in Native communities.  \n\n\n\nOur July 11 webinar will feature recent research on Native CDFIs\, including studies of Native CDFIs’ success with character-based lending practices and use of client counseling as a way to support clients and mitigate loan risk. The webinar will also offer insights from recently completed interviews with Native CDFI leaders across Indian Country who shared their perspectives on community needs\, tailoring products and services to meet those needs\, and where there are opportunities for and barriers to funding.   \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll be part of this important conversation.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nMichou Kokodoko\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nAdrienne Smith\, Opportunity Finance Network \n\n\n\nPete Upton (Ponca Tribe of Nebraska)\, Native CDFI Network \n\n\n\nLakota Vogel (Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe)\, Four Brands Community Fund\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis Board of Directors \n\n\n\nLaura Wheeler\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:30-2:37 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome\, Overview\, and Introductions\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:37-2:57 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nLending by Native CDFIs: Insights and Best Practices\n\n\n\nPresenter: Laura Wheeler\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:57-3:40 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nModerated Practitioner Discussion\n\n\n\nModerator: Michou Kokodoko\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nAdrienne Smith\, Opportunity Finance Network\n\n\n\nPete Upton (Ponca Tribe of Nebraska)\, Native CDFI Network\n\n\n\nLakota Vogel (Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe)\, Four Bands Community Fund\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis Board of Directors\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:40-3:45 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks and Transition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Rural Community Action Assembly: Broadband Deployment and Community Readiness
DESCRIPTION:A historic amount of federal funding for broadband infrastructure is on the way to each state across the country. Rural communities in our region are starting to assess their readiness to get and absorb this capital. Local leaders must make sure they’re prepared to make the most of this funding for their communities.  \n\n\n\nThis event is for rural economic or workforce development corporations\, nonprofits working with low- and moderate-income communities\, and other rural or countywide decision makers who are looking to obtain — or want to know more about — this funding. Attendees will gain insights on the forthcoming Broadband Equity\, Access\, and Deployment Act and the Digital Equity Act and how to weave them into a comprehensive economic development strategy. Presentations will include recent data on access in rural Pennsylvania and how to increase capacity for applying for grants. Additionally\, we’ll dive into the roles of small internet service providers\, and others in community efforts toward digital inclusion. Participation is free for this virtual event but registration is required. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers include\n\n\n\n\n\nChristopher Ali\, Pioneers Chair in Telecommunications\, Penn State University\n\n\n\nRoberto Gallardo\, Director\, Purdue Center for Regional Development\n\n\n\nLaShawn Williamson\, Founder and CEO\, Wave 7 Communications\, LLC\n\n\n\nMarty Qually\, County Commissioner\, Adams County (PA) \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nThis virtual meeting is a continuation of the Rural Community Action Assemblies. SUMMARY:FedTalk: Benefits Cliff: How It’s Impacting Workers\, Employers\, and the Economy
DESCRIPTION:Many lower-wage workers are familiar with the benefits cliff. This cliff occurs when an increase in a worker’s earned income causes a disproportionately greater loss of critical public assistance\, from housing to childcare and healthcare benefits. A cliff can be prompted by a modest raise or a worker taking a new job with higher pay\, or by someone rejoining the workforce after some time away. Sometimes the cliffs can be anticipated; often they are difficult to discern until a worker gets notice that they’ve lost a key benefit. It can be a disincentive to workers taking a job or wanting to advance in their career. \n\n\n\nIn the virtual FedTalk session on July 31\, you’ll learn how the benefits cliff impacts individuals and families\, employers\, policymaking\, and the economy overall. You’ll also learn about how some community organizations are working with state agencies and policymakers to make progress on the benefits cliff issue. Join us and bring your questions for this insightful conversation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelists\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScott FastWorkforce and Technology StrategistInnovate+Educate \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnne KandilisDirectorSpringfield WORKS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarielle LovecchioDirectorTennessee Alliance for Economic Mobility \n\n\n\n\n\nModerators\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrittany BirkenChief Economic Development Director and Principal AdviserFederal Reserve Bank of Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGabriella ChiarenzaCommunications AdvisorFed Communities \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit the event site for speaker bios > \n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation
