SUMMARY:A Continued Discussion on Financial and Payments Inclusion
DESCRIPTION:According to a 2021 study by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)\, 4.5 percent of American households do not have a bank account\, and 14.1 percent are considered underbanked. New research being conducted within the Federal Reserve System and in academia looks at existing barriers to financial inclusion and the importance of trust in banking and payments choices. \n\n\n\n\nWhy are people unbanked and underbanked in the US?\n\n\n\nHow do we define underserved in digital payments and banking services?\n\n\n\nHow does trust affect adoption of and access to digital payments and banking services?\n\n\n\nWhat do we know about people’s trust in financial institutions and nonbanks?\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a FedTalk to better understand these topics. SUMMARY:Understanding Racial Disparities in Lifetime Earnings and Life Expectancy
DESCRIPTION:In economic research\, income and wealth inequality are often measured using repeated cross-sections of data\, but these measures provide an incomplete description of inequality when there are differences in life expectancy between demographic groups. On Thursday\, November 14\, 2024\, at 11:00 am CT\, join the Economic Mobility Project of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago for a virtual event\, Understanding Racial Disparities in Lifetime Earnings and Life Expectancy. Chicago Fed economist Ezra Karger will share his research\, which uses census data to provide the first long-run estimates of lifetime earnings by race in the United States. His work explores the importance of life expectancy in the measurement of Black-White income inequality and how and why this ratio has experienced dramatic shifts over the past 100 years. \n\n\n\nThe research presentation will be followed by a panel of experts. William Darity Jr.\, Sita Nataraj Slavov\, Damon Jones\, and Nicholas J. Hill will discuss historical changes in racial disparities in income and life expectancy\, moderated by Jonnelle Marte\, Federal Reserve and economics reporter with Bloomberg News. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Class Dismissed: The Economic Cost of Pandemic Learning Loss
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\n\n\n\nImagine a classroom where the vibrant energy of students learning and growing is abruptly silenced. Schools worldwide shut their doors as the COVID-19 pandemic sweeps across nations\, leaving millions of students isolated from their teachers and peers. Online learning becomes the new norm\, but the digital divide and lack of resources create significant barriers. \n\n\n\nJoin us Thursday\, November 14\, for the next installment in our District Dialogues series as we bring together economists\, educators and policymakers to analyze how prolonged school closures and remote learning have affected student achievement and how it could impact our future workforce and economy. Attendees will gain insights into the long-term economic consequences of educational setbacks\, including potential impacts on workforce productivity\, educational inequality and economic growth. \n\n\n\nFour Ways to Attend\n\n\n\nFor this year’s District Dialogues event\, we’re offering four ways to join the conversation: In person at one of our three branch locations (Richmond\, Baltimore\, or Charlotte–addresses below) or virtually via Zoom. \n\n\n\n\n\nFederal Reserve Bank of Richmond\, Richmond Branch\, 701 E Byrd Street\, Richmond\, VA 23219\n\n\n\nFederal Reserve Bank of Richmond\, Baltimore Branch\, 502 S. SUMMARY:Survey of Community College Outcomes: 2024 Results and the Future of the Survey
DESCRIPTION:Community colleges play a major role in workforce and economic development\, and at the Richmond Fed\, we’re committed to understanding the economic impacts that important institutions like these have across the Fifth District. Unfortunately\, existing data collected across states do not fully describe the range of outcomes achieved by community college students. Individual community colleges use many metrics to gauge their success\, but these can vary from school to school\, and from state to state\, which makes it hard to compare across institutions and track outcomes consistently over time. \n\n\n\nThe Richmond Fed’s Survey of Community College Outcomes (SCCO) is a quantitative\, consistent system for measuring community college outcomes that provides a fuller view of what success looks like for community college students. This includes part-time students\, those who have attended college previously and other non-traditional students — and will allow for better analysis on how student success contributes to local workforce and economic development. Additionally\, we collect data on wraparound services offered by community colleges\, dual enrollment and enrollment in non-credit programs. \n\n\n\nJoin us on November 19 as we share the results of the 2024 Survey of Community College Outcomes and outline our vision for the future of the survey and our work with community colleges. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho Should Attend\n\n\n\nCommunity College employees\, workforce development organizations\, policymakers\, educators\, funders\, business leaders. \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nClifford Coppersmith\, President\, Chesapeake CollegeGalen DeHay\, President\, Tri-County Technical CollegeStephanie Norris\, Senior Research Analyst\, Federal Reserve Bank of RichmondLaura Dawson Ullrich\, Regional Economist and Senior Manager\, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond \n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation
