SUMMARY:Labor\, Leisure\, and Life Choices: How Child-Rearing and Local Amenities Impact Urban Migration
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, July 10\, 2025\, at 11:00 am CT\, join the Economic Mobility Project of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago for a thought-provoking virtual discussion on the intersections of skill development\, geographic mobility\, and urban living\, centered on “Skills\, migration\, and urban amenities over the life cycle\,” a study by Jason Faberman\, senior economist at the Chicago Fed. \n\n\n\nWe will explore how individuals decide where to move based on their skill levels and life stage and how urban amenities\, from job opportunities to lifestyle factors\, play a key role in attracting talent at different stages of their careers and lives. Moderated by Sarah Holder\, a panel of experts including Arthur Gailes\, Angela Habr\, and Hannah Love\, will examine the following questions. \n\n\n\n\n\nHow do cities attract and retain skilled workers at different life stages?\n\n\n\nWhat role do local amenities and economic conditions play in these migration patterns?\n\n\n\nHow do early-career choices shape long-term geographic and economic outcomes?\n\n\n\n\n\nWith implications for urban policy\, workforce development\, and regional planning\, this conversation is essential for researchers\, policymakers\, and professionals focused on labor markets\, human capital\, and the ever-evolving role of cities in a post-pandemic economy. \n\n\n\nAudience Q&A will follow the panel discussion. Viewers can ask questions in advance during event registration and on X @ChicagoFed using hashtag #UrbanAmenities. \n\n\n\nRegistration Deadline: July 10\, 2025 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:00 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome and Framing RemarksSpeaker: Kristen Broady\, Senior Economist\, Economic Advisor\, and Director of the Economic Mobility Project\, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:02 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nSkills\, Migration\, and Urban Amenities Over the Life CycleSpeaker: Jason Faberman\, Senior Economist & Economic Advisor\, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:18 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nPanel DiscussionModerator:  Sarah Holder\, Co-Host of Bloomberg’s Big Take Podcast and Reporter\, Bloomberg News \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\nArthur Gailes\, Senior Manager of Housing Supply Initiatives | AEI Housing Center\, American Enterprise Institute \n\n\n\nAngela Habr\, Executive Director\, Hyde Park Neighborhood Club \n\n\n\nHannah Love\, Fellow\, Brookings Metro\, Anne T. and Robert M. SUMMARY:Cutting Hours Instead of Cutting Jobs: Shared Work Within the Unemployment Insurance System

A little-known provision of the UI system\, “shared work” or “short-time compensation\,” provides benefits to workers who have their hours reduced. In this virtual event\, economic and policy experts will offer new insights on how the program is working and how states are working with employers to make use of shared work. \n\n\n\nThe event ties into the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis’ research series examining UI policies and their impact on low- and moderate-income workers. Join us as we learn from research\, data\, and practitioner perspectives on shared-work trends. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nJim Hegman\, Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development\n\n\n\nLeonidas Murembya\, Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency\n\n\n\nRyan Nunn\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nAlene Tchourumoff\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nTill von Wachter\, California Policy Lab\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12:00 – 12:07 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome and Opening RemarksSpeaker: Alene Tchourumoff\, Community Development and Engagement\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12:08 – 12:09 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nPresenter IntroductionSpeaker: Ryan Nunn\, Community Development and Engagement\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12:10 – 12:24 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nNew Data from Michigan on Shared WorkSpeaker:  Leonidas Murembya\, Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12:24 – 12:39 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nDifferences and Similarities in Research Findings from California DataSpeaker:  Till von Wachter\, California Policy Lab \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12:40 – 12:55 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nA Leader’s Perspective of Shared Work on the GroundSpeaker:  Jim Hegman\, Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12:56 – 1:00 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing RemarksIn Person \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation
