SUMMARY:Data Stories in Indian Country
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us December 13 for an event focused on innovative ways that Native communities\, policymakers\, and researchers are gathering and working with data to tell a more complete story of Indian Country. This event culminates the Center for Indian Country Development’s (CICD’s) 2023 webinar series: Cultivating Native Economies in the 21st Century. The series provides tribal leaders\, policymakers\, and practitioners with information they can use to strengthen and expand Indian Country economic prosperity. \n\n\n\nInformation on our communities teaches us about ourselves and helps us tell our stories. For too long\, data gaps in Indian Country have masked Native economic contributions and limited policymakers’ understanding of how to best direct resources. Today\, tribal governments are advancing data-collection systems on their own terms\, and new partnerships between Native communities and federal agencies are increasing Native Americans’ representation in national datasets. \n\n\n\nOur December 13 event will feature conversations with tribal leaders\, policymakers\, researchers\, and practitioners who are strengthening their collection and use of data—in ways that honor tribal data sovereignty. Speakers working with tribal governments\, Alaska Native Corporations\, and Native Hawaiian Organizations will reflect on what data are still needed to provide a more complete picture of Indian Country. CICD staff will also demonstrate new data tools available for understanding local and national economic conditions and opportunities. \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll be part of this important conversation. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nElliot Charette (Lac Du Flambeau and Red Cliff Bands of Lake Superior Chippewa)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nMaranda Compton (Delaware Tribe of Indians)\, Alexander Blewett III School of Law\, University of Montana\n\n\n\nAbigail Echo-Hawk (Pawnee)\, Seattle Indian Health Board\n\n\n\nLeonard “Lenny” Fineday (Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe)\, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe\n\n\n\nMatthew Gregg\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nAndrew Huff (Chippewa Cree Tribe)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nAmalea Jubara\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nCasey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nVaRene Martin (Mvskoke Nation)\, NAFOA\n\n\n\nRobert Miller (Eastern Shawnee Tribe)\, Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law\, Arizona State University\n\n\n\nRyan Nunn\, Community Development and CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nVanessa Palmer\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nVanessa Roanhorse (Navajo)\, Roanhorse Consulting\n\n\n\nAmber Schulz-Oliver (Celilo/Yakama)\, Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians Economic Development Corporation\n\n\n\nDarien Siguenza (Chamorro)\, Hawai‘i FoundHer\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Modernized Community Reinvestment Act and Indian Country
DESCRIPTION:A conversation on what the updated regulations mean for Native communities\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe invite you to join us November 28 for a conversation about recent updates to the regulations implementing the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) and how Indian Country could benefit. The event will feature key leaders from the Center for Indian Country Development (CICD) at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Speakers will provide an overview of the updated regulations and changes that encourage bank activities in Native Land Areas (NLAs). The event will also offer an opportunity to explore ways tribal governments\, federally insured banks\, and other entities serving NLAs can take advantage of these new opportunities. \n\n\n\nLast month the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System\, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation\, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency approved a once-in-a-generation update of the regulations governing how they implement the CRA\, a federal law that requires banking regulators to encourage banks to help meet the credit needs of the communities in which they do business\, including low- and moderate-income (LMI) neighborhoods. The modernized CRA reflects feedback from Indian Country stakeholders and includes—for the first time—unique provisions to help address the credit needs of Native lands. \n\n\n\nCICD played a role in engaging stakeholder input on proposed CRA updates\, partnering with national Native organizations to host Indian Country-specific webinars and listening sessions and encourage comment on proposed changes. \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll be part of this important conversation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is a virtual video event

SUMMARY:Understanding Neighborhood Racial Change
DESCRIPTION:The United States is segregated\, and racial stratification is a defining feature of American cities. Various types of demographic sorting have created and reinforced patterns of racial segregation. The Economic Mobility Project’s virtual event\, Understanding Neighborhood Racial Change\, taking place on November 16\, 2023\, from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm CT (12:00 pm to 1:15 pm ET)\, will highlight research showing that households choose neighborhoods based on selected criteria\, such as race makeup. Daniel Hartley\, senior economist at the Chicago Fed\, and his co-authors present a forward-looking model of neighborhood choice in which households hold preferences for neighborhood features\, including racial composition\, and they find that many households strongly prefer to live in same-race neighborhoods. \n\n\n\nTo provide a more granular analysis of racial residential sorting\, Marcus Casey\, director of undergraduate studies and associate professor of economics at the University of Illinois Chicago\, and his co-authors address the following question: To what extent are households responding to the identities of their new neighbors versus the internal changes in the neighborhood that accompany them? They present a new research design that seeks to separately identify a component of neighborhood racial change that is directly related to neighbors’ identities rather than associated neighborhood amenity changes. \n\n\n\nThe research presentations will be followed by a panel discussion with Andre Perry\, senior fellow at Brookings Metro; Rachael Woldoff\, professor of sociology at West Virginia University; Valerie Wilson\, director of the Economic Policy Institute’s Program on Race\, Ethnicity\, and the Economy; and Ashley Bell\, CEO of Ready Life. Stacey Vanek Smith\, NPR journalist and former host of The Indicator from Planet Money\, will be moderating the panel. They will address questions including the following: \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat can be done to create stable\, mixed-income\, racially diverse neighborhoods?\n\n\n\nWho can afford to move in response to a different-race neighbor\, and what is the financial impact of segregation and gentrification?\n\n\n\nWhat are some achievable public policy solutions to promote integrated neighborhoods?\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nSamir Mayekar\, Visiting Scholar\, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago\n\n\n\nDaniel Hartley\, Senior Economist\, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago\n\n\n\nMarcus Casey\, Associate Professor of Economics\, University of Illinois at Chicago\n\n\n\nStacey Vanek Smith\, Journalist and Host of The Indicator from Planet Money\, NPR\n\n\n\nAndre Perry\, Senior Fellow\, Brookings Metro\n\n\n\nValerie Wilson\, Director\, Program on Race\, Ethnicity\, and the Economy\, Economic Policy Institute\n\n\n\nRachael Woldoff\, Professor of Sociology\, West Virginia University\n\n\n\nAshley Bell\, Founder & CEO\, Ready Financial\, Inc.\n\n\n\nKristen Broady\, Senior Economist and Economic Advisor and Director of the Economic Mobility Project\, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:00 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nIntroduction\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:05 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nPreferences over the Racial Composition of Neighborhoods: Estimates and Implications\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:20 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nDistinguishing Causes of Neighborhood Racial Change: A Nearest Neighbor Design\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:35 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nPanel Discussion\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12:05 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nQ&A\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12:12 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Keys to Opportunity in the Housing Market: Renting\, Owning\, and Implications for the Racial Wealth Gap
DESCRIPTION:Stable and affordable rental housing provides an essential foundation for economic participation and upward mobility. At the same time\, homeownership has historically provided a primary pathway to wealth creation in the US. Consequently\, the dual aims of affordability and wealth generation can put rental and homeownership policies at odds with each other. \n\n\n\nJoin us November 13 at 10 am PT/1 pm ET for a research-driven discussion around efforts to increase rental affordability\, access to homeownership\, and housing stability. Experts will also address how different approaches to these aims will have implications for the ability of housing policy to reduce wealth disparities by race and income. \n\n\n\n\nWatch on Demand\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers & Agenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:00-1:05 pm ET \n\n\n\nIntroduction and welcoming remarks \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJennie BlizzardCommunications AdvisorFed Communities \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nElizabeth KneeboneAssistant Vice President\, Community Development ResearchFederal Reserve Bank of San Francisco \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:05-1:45 pm ET \n\n\n\nPanel 1: Strategies to address the affordability gap for renters \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeggy BaileyVice President for Housing and Income SecurityCenter on Budget and Policy PrioritiesModerator \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIngrid Gould EllenPaulette Goddard Professor of Urban Policy and Planning\, Director for Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban PolicyNew York University \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSara KimberlinExecutive Director and Senior Research ScholarStanford Center on Poverty and Inequality \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:45-2:25 pm ET \n\n\n\nPanel 2: Challenges in increasing access to homeownership and closing the racial wealth gap \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRocio Sanchez-MoyanoSenior Researcher\, Community DevelopmentFederal Reserve Bank of San FranciscoModerator \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJung Hyun ChoiSenior Research Associate\, Housing Finance Policy CenterUrban Institute \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarolina ReidI. SUMMARY:Conversations on Equity: The Role of Cities in the Pursuit of Economic Equity
DESCRIPTION:Cities are critical hubs of economic activity and opportunity\, but their growth potential in the United States has been constrained by historical policies and practices\, such as redlining and urban renewal\, as well as contemporary challenges. Understanding these structural barriers can help communities unlock opportunities for equitable growth. \n\n\n\nThe next Conversations on Equity event from the St. Louis Fed’s Institute for Economic Equity will explore how American cities can foster or inhibit economic equity. For this discussion\, Institute Director William M. Rodgers III will be joined by economist Rick McGahey\, senior fellow at the Schwartz Center and the Institute on Race\, Power and Political Economy and author of the recently published book “Unequal Cities: Overcoming Anti-Urban Bias to Reduce Inequality in the United States.” The conversation will draw on findings from that work. \n\n\n\nJoin us to learn about: \n\n\n\n\n\nThe unique role that cities play in our economy\n\n\n\nHow past and current barriers have led to disparities in economic growth and mobility within American cities and between cities and their suburbs\n\n\n\nPotential strategies for encouraging more equitable economic growth\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nWilliam M. Rodgers IIIRick McGahey \n\n\n\nThis event\, which begins with a 4:30 p.m. reception prior to the discussion\, will be held in person at the St. Louis Fed. The first 50 guest to arrive will receive a copy of the book “Unequal Cities: Overcoming Anti-Urban Bias to Reduce Inequality in the United States.” \n\n\n\nParking accommodations are complimentary\, and the event is free to attend. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information\, contact the St. Louis Fed’s Community Development staff at communitydevelopment@stls.frb.org. \n\n\n\nThe Conversations on Equity series features national thought leaders who are working to build awareness around obstacles to economic equity. Guests share their views on a range of topics and discuss evidence-based solutions aimed at dismantling such obstacles. \n\n\n\nPlease note: This is an in-person event only. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Addressing Obstacles to Opportunity for Foreign-Born Workers
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us November 6 for a virtual convening about barriers foreign-born workers may experience in the labor market and how states are responding. To open the event\, our staff will present Minneapolis Fed research on how occupational licensing can limit full labor force participation for foreign-born workers. We will also introduce our new Occupational Licensing Dashboard\, which provides insight into the landscape of worker licensure in the United States. We are excited to share these findings and resources\, as we believe that better understanding how the labor market functions for workers is a key part of the Minneapolis Fed’s mission of pursuing an economy that works for all of us. \n\n\n\nFollowing the research presentation\, a panel of subject matter experts from the government\, nonprofit\, and academic sectors will discuss what states are doing to better support foreign-born workers in the workforce. This conversation is timely for the Ninth Federal Reserve District this year\, as the Minnesota Legislature just passed ongoing funding for an Office for New Americans\, and the North Dakota Legislative Assembly created an Office for Legal Immigration. \n\n\n\nWe hope you will join us for this important conversation as we examine these issues on a local\, state\, and national level! \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nRich André\, American Immigration Council\n\n\n\nHugh Cassidy\, Kansas State University\n\n\n\nMary Hogan\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nVeena Iyer\, Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota\n\n\n\nAbdiwahab Mohamed\, Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development\n\n\n\nRyan Nunn\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nAlene Tchourumoff\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:00-1:05 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome\, Overview\, and Introductions\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Alene Tchourumoff\, Community Development and Engagement\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:05-1:25 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nPresentation: New Tools for Understanding How Occupational Licensing Matters to Workers\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Ryan Nunn\, Community Development and Engagement\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:25-2:25 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nPanel: State Actions to Better Integrate Foreign-Born Workers into the Labor Market\n\n\n\nModerator: Mary Hogan\, Community Development and Engagement\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nRich André\, American Immigration Council\n\n\n\nHugh Cassidy\, Kansas State University\n\n\n\nVeena Iyer\, Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota\n\n\n\nAbdiwahab Mohamed\, Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:25-2:30 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Equitable Investments for a Thriving Bay Area
DESCRIPTION:The Bay Area has experienced substantial changes in the geographic location and growth of low-income communities including low-income communities of color\, particularly into the outer regions such as Solano County\, eastern Contra Costa County\, and southern Santa Clara County. Despite unprecedented levels of pandemic-related resources and investments\, the outer regions of the Bay Area continue to be underfunded even when the population experiencing poverty continues to increase.  As a result\, these communities lack sufficient resources\, services\, and capacity to maintain long-term economic health and stability.  \n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, November 1 to explore the changing demographics of low-income communities across the Bay Area’s outer regions\, the unmet needs of these communities\, and opportunities to strengthen local capacity and investments.  \n\n\n\nAt this event\, attendees will: \n\n\n\n\n\nHear about research that will help provide a holistic picture of uneven community development funding and investments. These conditions exist within a context of well-documented racial disparities and systemic barriers to accessing capital. \n\n\n\nExamine unique community development challenges in outer suburban regions \n\n\n\nHear from local community organizations and funders who are working to close the gap between the needs of low-income communities and local investments/resources \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco in partnership with Urban Habitat and United Way Bay Area. \n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:FedTalk: What Is Wealth Distribution and Why Does It Matter?
DESCRIPTION:How a country’s wealth is divided among its population\, also called wealth distribution\, is a product of multiple factors including income\, household savings\, and asset returns. Recent measures reveal the wealthiest 1 percent of American households typically holds more than 30 percent of the country’s wealth – an imbalance that is significant and of particular interest to economists. \n\n\n\nWhat causes wealth inequality and why does wealth distribution matter to economists and policymakers? \n\n\n\nJoin the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland for a conversation about new ways to study wealth distribution and a question-and-answer session about the impact of wealth distribution and inequality in the United States. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:2023 Center for Indian Country Development Webinar Series: Nuts\, Bolts\, and Cables: Opportunities in Tribal Broadband
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us October 16 for a conversation about the research on tribal broadband and opportunities for tribes to improve their communities’ Internet access. This is the third event in the Center for Indian Country Development’s (CICD’s) 2023 webinar series: Cultivating Native Economies in the 21st Century. The series provides tribal leaders\, policymakers\, and practitioners with information they can use to strengthen and expand Indian Country economic prosperity. \n\n\n\nInternet access connects communities to economic opportunity and vital services. Research from CICD has found that tribal areas have inadequate access to high-speed Internet\, known as broadband. Today\, new funding and partnership possibilities are opening opportunities for tribes to improve their communities’ digital infrastructure. Seizing these opportunities requires accurate\, comprehensive data on the state of broadband across Indian Country. \n\n\n\nOur October 16 webinar will feature research on the tribal digital divide and information on modern broadband policies and programs. Tribal broadband practitioners and federal policymakers will discuss data challenges as well as opportunities for tribal governments to advance their service networks. Presenters and panelists will also explore the connection between tribes’ ability to make decisions about their digital infrastructure and tribal sovereignty. Participants will have the opportunity to share questions as part of a live question-and-answer session. \n\n\n\nThe event is held in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and the American Indian Policy Institute at Arizona State University. \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll be part of this important conversation. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nGeoffrey Blackwell (Muscogee\, Chickasaw\, Choctaw\, and Omaha)\, Co-Chair\, Economic\, Finance\, and Community Development Committee and Technology and Telecommunications Subcommittee\, National Congress of American Indians \n\n\n\nValerie Fast Horse (Coeur d’Alene Tribe)\, Coeur d’Alene Tribe \n\n\n\nCasey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nTraci Morris (Chickasaw)\, American Indian Policy Institute\, Arizona State University \n\n\n\nMatthew Rantanen (Cree)\, Southern California Tribal Chairmen’s Association and Tribal Delight Village \n\n\n\nSteven Shepelwich\, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City \n\n\n\nH Trostle (Cherokee Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nDanae Wilson (Nez Perce)\, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:00-2:10 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome and Introductory Remarks\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Casey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:10-2:15 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nOpening Blessing\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:15-2:20 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nTribal Broadband History and Current Funding\n\n\n\nPresenter: H Trostle (Cherokee Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:50-4:20 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nPanel: Federal Contracting and Tribal Economic Development\n\n\n\nModerator: H Trostle (Cherokee Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nGeoffrey Blackwell (Muscogee\, Chickasaw\, Choctaw\, and Omaha)\, National Congress of American Indians\n\n\n\nTraci Morris (Chickasaw)\, American Indian Policy Institute\, Arizona State University\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:45-3:10 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nNuts\, Bolts\, and Cables of Network Sovereignty\n\n\n\nModerator: Steven Shepelwich\,  Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nValerie Fast Horse (Coeur d’Alene Tribe)\, Coeur d’Alene Tribe\n\n\n\nMatthew Rantan (Cree)\, Southern California Tribal Chairmen’s Association and Tribal Digital Village\n\n\n\nDanae Wilson (Nez Perce)\, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:10-3:25 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nAudience Q&A\n\n\n\nModerator: H Trostle (Cherokee Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3:25-3:30 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks and Thank You\n\n\n\nSpeaker: H Trostle (Cherokee Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: Navigating Benefits Cliffs - Barriers and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is now available to watch on-demand. \n\n\n\nBenefits cliffs create economic challenges for workers and employers alike. A benefits cliff may occur when an increase in income—from working more hours\, getting a raise\, or taking a new position—pushes a worker above the income eligibility limit for one or more public assistance programs\, and the loss of assistance is greater than the value of the increase. This forces people to choose between their family’s immediate financial best interest and their own longer-term wage growth and career advancement. These cliffs can also stymie employers seeking to hire workers and develop their skills through internal career pathway opportunities. \n\n\n\nJoin us October 12th for a dynamic session with experts exploring this economic challenge from the perspective of employers\, the Federal Reserve\, and community leaders who help families navigate public assistance programs and plan for career advancement opportunities. You’ll learn about tools developed by the Atlanta Fed that can identify and inform mitigation strategies. You’ll also hear about innovation pilots including Florida\, North Carolina\, Tennessee\, and Washington D.C. that may inform the future efforts of state and community leaders working to develop solutions to the benefits cliff. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrittany Birken\, PhDDirector and Principal AdvisorFederal Reserve Bank of Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKwain BryantManager\, Career NavigationGoodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTalethia EdwardsFamily Advocate & Coalition BuilderThe H.A.N.D. SUMMARY:Fueling an Inclusive Economy: The Role of Employment Social Enterprises
DESCRIPTION:Despite recent record lows in unemployment\, many Americans are on the sidelines of the economy due to employment barriers like experiences with homelessness or justice system involvement. Employment social enterprises are businesses that reveal and reinforce the talent of these individuals\, so the economy can benefit from their skills and contributions. \n\n\n\nThe employment social enterprise model is an evidence-based solution that successfully transitions people into the workforce\, while generating earned revenue to cover their programmatic costs. However\, employment social enterprises\, especially those led by entrepreneurs that have been historically or systemically marginalized\, have faced barriers in accessing start-up and growth capital. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a discussion about how employment social enterprises remove barriers to employment for Americans who are traditionally sidelined from the labor market. At this event\, participants will: \n\n\n\n\n\nExplore different models and business practices for connecting this untapped sector of the workforce with stable\, quality jobs that benefit employers\, individuals\, and broader communities.\n\n\n\n\n\nHear from experts about strategies aimed at building an inclusive economy that works for everyone.\n\n\n\n\n\nReview research from the Federal Reserve System’s Worker Voices Project\, which aims to provide a more holistic understanding of workers’ recent experiences in the labor market.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event offering in-person and virtual attendance options. SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: How CDFIs are faring – Insights from the Fed’s 2023 CDFI Survey
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is now available to watch on-demand. \n\n\n\nCommunity Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) provide financial products and services to underserved markets where it may be difficult to access what traditional financial institutions offer. Every other year\, the Fed conducts a survey of CDFIs to better understand the barriers and opportunities that they face. This year’s survey sought input on a variety of topics that range from demand for products and product innovation. \n\n\n\nThis year\, 453 institutions responded to the Fed’s 2023 CDFI Survey. Learn about key findings from the survey and thoughts about the road ahead for CDFIs. During the survey presentation\, speakers will discuss demand for CDFIs’ products and services\, challenges to meeting demand—including lending capital—and innovations in products and practices. Plus\, learn about CDFIs’ approaches to tracking outcomes—and their limitations. Then\, speakers will discuss how the survey results help inform future Fed research initiatives. Speakers will share Fed research on CDFIs’ use of secondary markets and financial leverage. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSurekha CarpenterResearch AnalystFederal Reserve Bank of Richmond \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharlene “Charly” van DijkSenior Advisor\, Community Economic DevelopmentFederal Reserve Bank of Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJonathan KivellDirector of Community InvestmentsFederal Reserve Bank of New York \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaria Carmelita RectoCommunity Development SpecialistFederal Reserve Bank of New York \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJacob ScottCommunity Development AnalystFederal Reserve Bank of New York \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJennie BlizzardCommunications AdvisorFed Communitiesmoderator \n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Connecting Communities®\n\n\n\nReal people. SUMMARY:Conversations on Equity: Women\, Workforce and the Wage Gap
DESCRIPTION:The last 75 years ushered in a convergence in the labor force participation of men and women. In 1948\, only 33% of women participated in the labor force\, compared with 87% of men. Fast-forward to 2022\, when 57% of women and 69% of men participated in the labor force. Despite this convergence\, pay gaps and other structural barriers still prevent women from benefitting from their labor more fully. The next event in the St. Louis Fed’s Conversations on Equity series will explore barriers to participation and more equitable wages that women face in the labor market. This in-person event is free to attend but registration is required by August 16\, 2023. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent details\n\n\n\nThis event will feature a discussion with William M.
