DESCRIPTION:Lack of access to homeownership options is a barrier to participation in the economy for low- and moderate-income communities. While homeownership is the primary form of wealth accumulation in the U.S.\, it is increasingly unattainable for low- and moderate-income populations\, particularly in job-rich metro areas.  \n\n\n\nJoin us on Tuesday\, March 25th as we dig deeper into the landscape of homeownership types beyond single-family\, and the challenges and opportunities that come with financing and developing  them.   \n\n\n\nDrawing on a new SF Fed report quantifying more affordable homeownership types—such as condos\, co-ops\, community land trusts (CLTs)\, duplexes\, and homes with accessory dwelling units (ADUs)—this session will include research findings and a panel of speakers from organizations that are innovating around financing and development models for different types of homeownership. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:2025 Investing in Rural America: Elevating What Works
DESCRIPTION:Join the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond for the sixth annual Investing in Rural America Conference on May 20‒21\, 2025. One of our two mandates from Congress is maximum employment\, and we are committed to understanding the factors that impact labor force participation and economic growth. This is especially important in small towns and rural communities\, which make up nearly a quarter of the Fifth District and often lag in these economic outcomes. By engaging with these communities\, we can better understand their unique challenges and identify ways to support them.  \n\n\n\nThis year’s conference theme is Elevating What Works\, during which we will spotlight the strategies and solutions that bolster economic and social vitality in rural communities — embracing empowerment\, working together and leveraging assets. \n\n\n\nBreakout sessions will be organized into two tracks: \n\n\n\n\n\nBuilding Skills for Rural Success: This conference track will focus on empowering rural communities through skill development and resource sharing. Participants will explore innovative strategies and best practices for meeting community needs and leveraging local assets.\n\n\n\nTackling Big Barriers to Labor Force Participation: This conference track addresses critical barriers to labor force participation\, exploring solutions to enhance inclusivity and accessibility in the workforce. Sessions will focus on key challenges\, such as childcare\, transportation and skills gaps\, including pandemic learning loss. Attendees will gain insights into effective strategies for removing obstacles and fostering an environment where all individuals can contribute to the labor market.\n\n\n\n\n\nWe anticipate this event will sell out\, so make sure to secure your spot today! Register by May 5\, 2025. \n\n\n\nInterested in learning more about this conference series? Check out our conference content from previous years and learn more about our work focused on helping small towns and rural communities thrive. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho should attend\n\n\n\nPolicymakers\, community representatives\, business executives\, nonprofit leaders\, investors\, workforce development professionals. \n\n\n\nRegistration Fees:\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission $150Non-Profit / Government $95Student $50 \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the conference as we come together to elevate what works and inspire meaningful change in small towns and rural communities \n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Rural Economic Development Summit: Health Ecosystems and Workforce Pipelines
DESCRIPTION:Strong healthcare systems are vital to rural communities in a number of ways. In addition to providing essential healthcare to residents\, rural hospitals and providers also create jobs\, stimulate economic activity through their local spending\, and support the health and well-being of the local workforce. We’ll explore policies\, best practices\, and innovative ways to support rural health initiatives through an economic development strategy.  \n\n\n\nTopics include strengthening pipelines to jobs and pathways to healthcare careers\, attracting and retaining local talent to meet local needs\, addressing the challenges related to rural healthcare finance and service delivery\, and investing in and supporting healthcare systems as anchor institutions. \n\n\n\nSpeakers will include:  \n\n\n\n\n\nValerie Arkoosh\, Secretary of Human Services\, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania;\n\n\n\nBrad Fulton\, Associate Professor\, Paul H. SUMMARY:Conversations with the Fed: Workers’ Experiences with Unemployment Insurance
DESCRIPTION:Unemployment insurance (UI) helps laid-off workers stay afloat when they are looking for a job. How do economists think about UI and its effects on the labor market? What factors help shape workers’ access to UI? And why are researchers at the Fed interested in all this? Ayushi Narayan and Ryan Nunn\, economists in Community Development and Engagement\, will bring research to bear on questions like these during a virtual event on Wednesday\, June 4\, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. CT. \n\n\n\nRyan Nunn leads applied research in Community Development and Engagement at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. His team works to supply policymakers and practitioners with evidence that can inform decision-making and improve outcomes for low- and moderate-income communities. Before coming to the Bank\, Ryan was a fellow in economic studies at the Brookings Institution and policy director for the Hamilton Project. Prior to that\, Ryan was an economist at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Ryan’s work has focused on analysis of labor market trends and institutions. He has published research in journals including Labour Economics\, the European Economic Review\, and the Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. In 2024\, he served as a senior economist at the White House’s Council of Economic Advisers. Ryan received his undergraduate degree in economics from Case Western Reserve University and his Ph.D. in public policy and economics from the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. \n\n\n\nAyushi Narayan conducts research on labor market institutions to help the Community Development and Engagement team understand how employment-related policies and trends affect low- and moderate-income communities. Prior to joining the Bank\, her work included roles at the Council of Economic Advisers\, Nike\, and Amazon. Ayushi received her B.A. from Dartmouth College and her Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n9:00 – 10:00 a.m. CT \n\n\n\n\n\nPresentation and Q&A\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: Highlights from the 2024 Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking
DESCRIPTION:Watch on demand \n\n\n\nThis session will share the major findings from the annual Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking (SHED)\, which was fielded in October 2024 and released on May 28\, 2025. The survey is a key tool of the Federal Reserve Board for understanding the financial circumstances of low-income families and understanding potential risks to their financial health. In this Connecting Communities webinar\, researchers from the Board will discuss the trends in family finances\, employment\, and financial risks experienced by U.S. adults. \n\n\n\nIn addition to monitoring major aspects of household financial circumstances on an ongoing basis\, each year the survey also covers other topics that can directly affect financial well-being. In 2024\, the survey included new questions on financial fraud\, brought back questions on gig work\, and expanded the modules on caregiving and homeowners insurance—some of which will be covered in the session.
