SUMMARY:2025 Institute Research Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Opportunity & Inclusive Growth Institute’s annual research conference showcases the range of frontier-style research that the Institute engages with and supports. Presenters\, discussants\, and attendees will engage in a broad scholarly exchange of ideas around presented papers. \n\n\n\nThe keynote speaker will be David Card\, the Class of 1950 Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and the 2021 winner of the Nobel prize in economics. Card pioneered the use of natural experiments to identify and measure causal effects. Much of his research has focused on the labor market effects of education\, immigration\, and minimum wages. Card has described his research as seeking to “understand why some people succeed and others fail\, and how their success or failure is related to the environment\, institutions and the people themselves.” Card was also the 1995 recipient of the John Bates Clark Medal\, the top honor for economists under 40. He served as president of the American Economic Association in 2021. \n\n\n\nAn Early Career Researchers’ Workshop will follow on November 14. That event\, which is by invitation\, focuses on developing research of scholars who have completed their Ph.D. in the last eight years (from 2017 to 2024). \n\n\n\nThe conference organizer is Amanda Michaud\, and this year’s program committee members are Taha Choukhmane\, Stephie Fried\, Daniel Hartley\, Amanda Michaud\, Serdar Ozkan\, Kosali Simon\, and Abigail Wozniak. \n\n\n\nThe program and photos from last year’s conference can be found here. \n\n\n\nThis registration is for the livestream only. For inquiries about in-person registration\, please email MplsInstitute@mpls.frb.org. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event.

SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: How Fed Data Tools Can Inform Economic Mobility
DESCRIPTION:Watch On-Demand \n\n\n\nOccupational and economic mobility are crucial for a healthy economy that supports all. Join us for a conversation about the Federal Reserve Banks of Philadelphia and Cleveland’s Occupational Mobility Explorer (OME) and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s Career Ladder Identifier and Financial Forecaster (CLIFF) tools. The OME sheds light on skills-based career pathways in the US labor market for jobseekers and employers. CLIFF tools help workers understand how career advancement decisions may affect public benefits\, taxes\, and tax credits. Together\, these two tools can help workers and employers identify potential career advancement opportunities and better understand how such trajectories might better position them for greater economic stability. \n\n\n\nThe session will provide a brief overview of each tool and demonstrate how both can be used together to help inform individuals about their own economic mobility journey. This includes a better understanding of their possible career paths and the potential financial implications of specific occupational choices. Panelists from organizations working to leverage data resources to serve their communities will discuss skills-based hiring\, navigating benefits cliffs\, and fostering partnerships with employers. \n\n\n\nRelated resources: \n\n\n\n\n\nOccupational Mobility Explorer\n\n\n\nCareer Ladder Identifier and Financial Forecaster\n\n\n\nFed Communities’ Benefits Cliff stories series\n\n\n\nPowerful tool helps job seekers chart a path to higher-paying roles\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJill Avery-StossPresident & CEOThe Institute \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTracey EverettDirectorJobs for the Future \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKyle FeePolicy AdvisorFederal Reserve Bank of Cleveland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMayra NunezProgram and Compliance ManagerCareerSource Central Florida \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJohn ReesSenior Community and Economic Development AdvisorFederal Reserve Bank of Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSergio GaleanoCommunity and Economic Development AdvisorFederal Reserve Bank of Atlanta(moderator) \n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Connecting Communities®\n\n\n\nReal people. SUMMARY:Amenities and Office Vacancy Rates: What Really Draws Workers Back to the Office?
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, February 11\, 2026\, join the Chicago Fed’s Economic Mobility Project for the virtual event\, Amenities and Office Vacancy Rates: What Really Draws Workers Back to the Office? Office vacancy rates remain high across U.S. cities as employers experiment with hybrid work schedules and invest in workplace upgrades meant to lure employees back. But which features matter? Presenting new research\, Chicago Fed business economist Martin Lavelle will explore how amenities\, building age\, and design choices influence office vacancy rates in Chicago\, Detroit\, and other cities across the nation. Also examining where common assumptions about return-to-office enticements falter\, Lavelle will discuss how his recent research challenges some of the most popular narratives in commercial real estate. \n\n\n\nThe event will begin with framing remarks from Samir Mayekar of the University of Chicago’s Polsky Center. Drawing from his experiences in city government and as an entrepreneur\, Mayekar will set the broader context for why office market outcomes matter for developers\, tenants\, and workers\, as well as for downtown vitality. Following Lavelle’s research presentation\, there will be a panel discussion. Tracy Hadden Loh of Brookings Metro will offer her views on office markets through a national urban policy and downtown revitalization lens. Amy Binstein of Newmark will share her perspective on current commercial real estate dynamics. And Mayekar will return to connect the research and data to urban development challenges and opportunities in Chicago\, Detroit\, and other cities. The discussion will be moderated by Danny Ecker\, who covers the commercial real estate landscape for Crain’s Chicago Business. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Where Could Reshoring Manufacturers Find Workers?
DESCRIPTION:In recent decades\, manufacturing employment has fallen dramatically in the United States even as it has expanded globally. Policymakers have focused on trying to rebuild America’s manufacturing base through initiatives like the CHIPS and Science Act and new tariff policies. But a crucial question remains: Who will fill these jobs if manufacturing returns to the United States? This Fed Talk will dive into research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland that addresses this issue. \n\n\n\nOur discussion will highlight pools of potential manufacturing workers\, including \n\n\n\n\n\nWorkers who could transition to manufacturing from lower-paying industries such as retail and food service\n\n\n\nYoung people entering the workforce who could begin careers in manufacturing\n\n\n\nWorking-age adults not currently in school or the workforce\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelists will also explore which regions of the country have existing manufacturing clusters\, where manufacturing employment has grown recently\, and which areas have the strongest potential for workforce expansion. The discussion could help employers\, workforce development professionals\, and educators prepare for potential reshoring of manufacturing jobs by creating pathways to help people start manufacturing careers. \n\n\n\nPanelists will take your questions following the presentation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nMarcia Ballinger\, President\, Lorain County Community College\n\n\n\nJacob Duritsky\, Vice President\, Strategy and Research\, TEAM NEO\n\n\n\nAnnette Vickers\, Senior Research Manager\, ARM Institute\n\n\n\nStephan Whitaker\, Senior Policy Economist\, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland\n\n\n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\n\nKhaz Finley\, Assistant Vice President\, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

Built on Indigenous research principles of tribal data sovereignty and reciprocity\, the Survey of Native Nations leverages the Federal Reserve System’s secure data infrastructure to protect and steward tribal data. \n\n\n\nThis webinar will provide tribal leaders\, tribal finance practitioners\, tribal government services staff\, and Native organization leaders with the opportunity to learn how tribes are leveraging this unique data collaboration to advance their data practices. CICD staff will discuss the survey’s flexible design\, provide an overview of data-security procedures\, and share examples of the data analyses that participating tribes receive. Tribal leaders will share their perspectives on how Native nations can use survey results to advance their individual economic development goals. \n\n\n\nThose who are interested in exploring their tribe’s potential participation in the survey will learn how to connect with project leadership or request a briefing for their tribal government. \n\n\n\nSpeakers will include: \n\n\n\n\n\nFirst Assistant Chief Wayne Adkins (Chickahominy Indian Tribe)\, Chickahominy Indian Tribe\n\n\n\nPhil Gover (Northern and Southern Paiute\, Pawnee\, and Comanche Nations)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nCasey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nH Trostle (Cherokee Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nVice Chair Crystal Williams (Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana)\, Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:00 pm – 1:10 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome and Introduction to the Survey of Native Nations\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Casey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:10 pm – 1:30 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nSurvey Overview\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Phil Gover (Northern and Southern Paiute\, Pawnee\, and Comanche Nations)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:30 pm – 1:45 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nA Data-Driven Future: Survey of Native Nations\n\n\n\nModerator: H Trostle (Cherokee Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nDiscussants: \n\n\n\n\nFirst Assistant Chief Wayne Adkins (Chickahominy Indian Tribe)\, Chickahominy Indian Tribe\n\n\n\nVice Chair Crystal Williams (Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana)\, Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:45 pm – 1:58 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nAudience Q&A\n\n\n\nModerator: H Trostle (Cherokee Nation)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:58 pm – 2:00 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks and Thank You\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Phil Gover (Northern and Southern Paiute\, Pawnee\, and Comanche Nations)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\nPresented by the Center for Indian Country Development at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\, with the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians\, NAFOA\, National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development\, National Congress of American Indians\, and United South and Eastern Tribes. \n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Investor Ownership of Single-Family Rentals in the Twin Cities Region
DESCRIPTION:Investors own an increasing share of single-family rentals over the past two decades. Today\, nearly one in 20 single-family homes in the Twin Cities region is investor-owned. While creating more options for renters\, the rise of investor-owned homes has reduced opportunities for homeownership\, particularly in some neighborhoods. To better understand investor ownership in the Twin Cities region\, the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis maintains a data tool that tracks investors’ activities within the metro from 2006 through 2024. Additional analyses reveal how the geography of investor ownership has changed over time. Join our webinar to learn more about both investor-owned rentals and the Minneapolis Fed’s data tool. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n9:00 am – 9:05 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome and introduction\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Libby Starling \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10:05 am – 10:12 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nOverview of the Minneapolis Fed’s Investor Ownership Dashboard\n\n\n\nPresenter: Maxine Xu \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10:12 am – 10:20 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nKey Trends in Investor Ownership in the Twin Citites Region\n\n\n\nPresenter: Ben Horowitz \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10:20 am – 10:28 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nAudience Q&A\n\n\n\nModerator: Libby Starling \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10:30 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Libby Starling \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:College Degrees and the Labor Market: Long-Run Trends and Recent Challenges for Young Graduates
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, a college degree was a reliable ticket to faster job placement\, lower unemployment\, and rising wages. But something fundamental shifted around the year 2000\, and the consequences are only now becoming fully visible. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a discussion of new research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland that reveals a major transformation in the American labor market. Using nearly 50 years of data\, researchers Alexander Cline and Barış Kaymak examine how the economic forces in the labor market that once strongly favored college-educated workers have shifted over the past several decades—and how young college graduates have lost their long-standing advantage in finding jobs faster. \n\n\n\nWhat you’ll discover: \n\n\n\n\n\nWhy the unemployment gap between young high school and college graduates has hit its lowest level since the late 1970s—and why this isn’t just a postpandemic phenomenon\n\n\n\nHow growth in labor demand switched from “college-biased” to “education-neutral” after the year 2000\, ending decades of college-biased growth\n\n\n\nWhat advantages college graduates retain despite their struggles with initial job placement and why the story is more nuanced than “college degrees don’t matter anymore”\n\n\n\n\n\nThis research documents significant shifts in how education relates to labor market outcomes over the past several decades. The findings raise important questions about the changing nature of work\, education\, and economic opportunity. \n\n\n\nThe speaker will take your questions following the presentation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nBarış Kaymak\, Economic and Policy Advisor\, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland\n\n\n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\n\nAmy Morona\, Higher Education Reporter\, Signal Ohio\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Rural Community Action Assembly: Rural Health Funding and Community Readiness
DESCRIPTION:The Rural Health Transformation (RHT) Program currently has up to $193 million available for investment in rural areas in Pennsylvania. Beginning in 2026\, this five-year federal program aims to expand workforce opportunities\, improve health outcomes\, and catalyze resilient economic growth in rural communities. \n\n\n\nThe RHT Program is designed to invest in three important areas: \n\n\n\n\n\nPeople – Develop your local workforce with new skills and opportunities.\n\n\n\nTechnology – Bring cutting-edge tools and resources to rural healthcare and beyond.\n\n\n\nInnovation – Test bold new strategies that promote sustainable care models for years to come.\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat makes this different? This funding is designed to spark collaboration across sectors — connecting healthcare with education\, business\, technology\, and economic and workforce development. SUMMARY:Human Capital in a Time of Low Real Rates
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, March 31\, 2026\, at 11:00 a.m. CT\, join the Chicago Fed’s Economic Mobility Project for a virtual event\, Human Capital in a Time of Low Real Rates\, examining how low interest rate environments impact human capital investment and opportunity. The event will begin with framing remarks from Dr. Tamara Hoff Pope\, Chief Strategy Officer for Chicago Scholars. Chicago Fed economist\, Jung Sakong will present findings from his paper\, Human Capital in a Time of Low Real Rates. The paper develops a macroeconomic framework linking persistently low real interest rates to differences in human capital investment across families and examines how these dynamics affect long-run labor market outcomes and intergenerational economic mobility. \n\n\n\nFollowing the research presentation\, a moderated panel discussion will explore the policy implications of these findings\, including what they mean for education systems\, workforce development\, and efforts to expand economic opportunity in low-rate environments. Panelists will include: \n\n\n\n\n\nElizabeth Akers\, Senior Fellow\, American Enterprise Institute\n\n\n\nJonathan Rothwell\, Principal Economist\, Gallup\n\n\n\nMarie Lynn Miranda\, Chancellor\, University of Illinois Chicago\n\n\n\n\n\nThe discussion will be moderated by Samantha Chatman\, weekend anchor for ABC7 Chicago. \n\n\n\nRegistration Deadline: March 31\, 2026 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation
