SUMMARY:Evaluating Digital Skills: Data\, Measurement Tools\, and Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Demand for digital skills in the labor market is high across occupational sectors. Research from the National Skills Coalition and Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta found that 92 percent of jobs analyzed required digital skills\, yet a third of workers do not have the digital skills needed for these roles. This digital skill gap disproportionately impacts lower-income individuals\, limiting career options and opportunities for economic mobility.    \n\n\n\nThis webinar highlights research on evaluating digital skill levels and the implications for workforce participation. It addresses methods for measuring digital skills and the importance of understanding varying skill levels to help close the digital skill divide.  \n\n\n\nSpace is limited.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 2024 Digital Inclusion Webinar Series\n\n\n\nJoin us during Digital Inclusion Week for a series of webinars highlighting the latest research on digital inclusion. SUMMARY:The Rural Futures Series: The Lay of the Land: Labor\, Zoning\, and Housing in Rural Communities
DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, at a conference in Grand Rapids\, MI\, the Chicago Fed helped create conversations on the challenges and opportunities rural economic development faces. Now\, we’d like to start building on those conversations with a deeper discussion on how rural communities are attracting labor with the help of creative zoning practices and housing policies\, as well as ways to mitigate the risks of economic development. Come learn about how communities are reimagining land use and collaborating with their neighbors on place-making initiatives that not only attract labor but also the employment opportunities that come with having a sufficient workforce in a region. The conference will also include a trip to Newton\, IA\, to see how Newton has executed some of these initiatives after the closing of their biggest employer\, Maytag. \n\n\n\nOver two days\, you will learn about the following: \n\n\n\n\n\nReplicable strategies for attracting and retaining laborGain an understanding of how rural communities can attract and retain a skilled workforce through discussions on current labor trends\, immigration\, and strategies to make rural areas more appealing to skilled workers.\n\n\n\nMitigating risk in rural economic developmentDiscover techniques for managing risks in rural economic development for investors and communities alike. Sessions will explore the roles of public funding\, partnerships\, and regionalism in creating environments conducive to investment and community trust.\n\n\n\nCreative housing solutionsExamine housing markets and the reasons for shortages in rural communities. Sessions will also explore creative approaches to addressing rural housing challenges through policy\, partnerships\, and community engagement. Learn how to encourage housing development that attracts skilled workers and supports community growth.\n\n\n\nHistorical perspective on zoning and land useUnderstand the history and impact of zoning policies on community and economic prosperity\, and then delve into how rural areas can rethink land use to promote sustainable growth and resilience.\n\n\n\nBus tour of Newton\, IowaParticipate in a hands-on learning opportunity with a visit to Newton\, Iowa\, where participants will see how community-driven initiatives are revitalizing the area and creating new opportunities.\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit the event registration site for the latest agenda details. \n\n\n\nRegistration Deadline: October 8\, 2024. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:The Broadband Affordability Burden: Exploring Research and Policies for Affordable High-Speed Internet for All
DESCRIPTION:The broadband affordability gap across households in the U.S. is one of the primary obstacles to accessing the internet. Of the 28.2 million U.S. households that do not have high-speed broadband\, 18 million are offline because they cannot afford the cost of an at-home internet connection. According to a Benton Institute survey\, 43 percent of low-income households are subscription vulnerable\, meaning they have lost service because of difficulty paying broadband bills\, find it very difficult to afford service\, or live at or near the poverty line.    \n\n\n\nThis webinar features research on the cost and affordability of high-speed broadband\, especially for low-and-moderate income households. It looks at the household factors associated with the broadband cost burden\, the implications of the end of the Affordable Connectivity Program\, and strategies for making broadband affordable for all.  \n\n\n\nSpace is limited.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 2024 Digital Inclusion Webinar Series\n\n\n\nJoin us during Digital Inclusion Week for a series of webinars highlighting the latest research on digital inclusion. SUMMARY:Pathways to Progress: Strengthening West Tennessee’s Young Adult Workforce
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, the St. Louis Fed’s Community Development team held 16 roundtables across the Eighth District to better understand the needs of our region’s workforce. Leaders in business\, education and community development from across eastern Arkansas\, West Tennessee and the Mississippi Delta shared their insights. Join us in person to learn more about those insights and approaches for shifting systemic and emergent structural barriers to labor force participation in the region. \n\n\n\nIn 2022\, the Greater Memphis area saw the largest decline in labor force across Tennessee\, and that decline has continued over the last two years\, according to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. In addition to rising unemployment\, Tennessee has the seventh highest percentage of disconnected youth in the U.S. meaning they are neither working nor in school. \n\n\n\nAt this event\, you’ll hear from business and industry leaders\, community organizations and educational partners from across West Tennessee who have deployed successful programs and strategies for working together to expand workforce opportunities for vulnerable populations.  \n\n\n\nYou will have an opportunity during registration to submit questions in advance of the event’s Q&A session.  \n\n\n\nThere is no charge to attend this event\, but registration by Sept. 3 is required. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact the St. Louis Fed’s Community Development staff at communitydevelopment@stls.frb.org. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nVinessa Brown\, Lifeline to SuccessWorks\n\n\n\nAmber Covington\, Workforce Development Board—Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce\n\n\n\nMatthew Gould\, The Hospitality Hub\n\n\n\nLatasha Harris\, Memphis Medical District Collaborative\n\n\n\nDexter McKinney\, Methodist Hospital\n\n\n\nSydney Diavua\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis\n\n\n\nMike Eggleston\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis\n\n\n\nNorman Jones\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis – Memphis Zone\n\n\n\nDouglas Scarboro\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis\n\n\n\nNicole Summers-Gabr\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:30 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nBreakfast and Networking\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n8:35 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome\n\n\n\nDouglas Scarboro\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis—Memphis Branch\, and Tracey Hall\, Southwest Tennessee Community College \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n8:50 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nFindings and Insights on the Labor Market for Young Adults in West Tennessee\n\n\n\nSydney Diavua and Nicole Summers-Gabr\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n9:10 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nFireside Chat: Centering Young Adults in Workforce Entry and Development\n\n\n\nMatt Gould\, The Hospitality Hub\, and Norman Jones III\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n9:30 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nPanel Discussion and Q & A\n\n\n\nLocal community leaders unpacking workforce barriers and best practices for young adults \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10:15 am CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: Economic Insights from Lower-Income Communities: Findings from the 2024 Community Perspectives Survey
DESCRIPTION:Watch on demand. \n\n\n\nIn April 2024\, the Federal Reserve conducted the Community Perspectives Survey\, which focuses on economic conditions in low- to moderate-income (LMI) communities and the health of organizations serving them. Overall\, the survey found poor conditions for economic mobility in LMI communities. Access to housing and increasing cost of goods and services were among the top challenges. Respondents did note that continued availability of jobs was contributing positively to economic mobility. \n\n\n\nJoin Federal Reserve Staff and leaders from national community development organizations for a discussion about the findings and how these organizations continue to provide vital services to LMI communities and play a part in promoting economic resilience and mobility.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichael ButchkoVice President of Business IntelligenceNeighborWorks \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVioleta GutkowskiAssociate Economist Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMelissa JohnsonManaging Director of State StrategiesNational Skills Coalition \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrank WoodruffExecutive DirectorCommunity Opportunity Alliance \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSydney DiavuaAssistant Vice President\, Community DevelopmentFederal Reserve Bank of St. Louismoderator \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Connecting Communities®\n\n\n\nReal people. SUMMARY:Exploring Flood Risk for New York City Renters\, Homeowners\, and Communities of Color
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, September 5\, 2024\, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York will host a virtual event exploring findings from two papers on flood risk to low-and-moderate income households in New York City. The papers\, released earlier this year by the Community Development team\, found that approximately one in ten low- to moderate-income people\, immigrants\, and racial and ethnic minorities in New York City live in a flood-prone census tract. The event will detail which New York City neighborhoods are most exposed to flood risk. Speakers will also discuss the financial impact of flooding on residents\, including property loss and damage\, lost labor hours\, and health costs. \n\n\n\nThis event will be of interest to researchers\, nonprofits\, community bankers\, policymakers\, and small business owners. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Resources\n\n\n\nFlood Risk and Basement Housing in New York City: The Impact of Extreme Weather on Vulnerable Housing Stock \n\n\n\nFlooding Impacts on Household Finances: Insights from Focus Groups in New York City \n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:GenAI for Economic Opportunity: Early Learnings from Philanthropy and Nonprofits
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on August 27 for a series of panel discussions from our EmergingTech Economic Research Network (EERN) on how philanthropy and nonprofit organizations throughout our District’s Bay Area are navigating the emergence of generative artificial intelligence in the communities they serve.  \n\n\n\nAs more private and public sector organizations expand their use of genAI tools\, there is a growing need to understand how this new technology will impact the economic opportunity of low-income communities. To help meet this need\, we have organized an exploration of genAI’s potential to address barriers to economic mobility. Showcasing philanthropic and nonprofit organizations leading the effort to leverage genAI to benefit low-income households\, this event will feature a presentation from Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI on the use of genAI in the social impact sector\, a panel discussion with philanthropic leaders; and a showcase of early use cases highlighting genAI’s potential. \n\n\n\nWith its ability to invest in design and experimentation\, philanthropy has the power to partner with community organizations to employ new technologies like genAI in support of underserved communities. We will spotlight the diverse ways philanthropic efforts can bolster the deployment of Gen AI within organizations dedicated to serving marginalized communities. \n\n\n\nWe’re excited for you to join us in a robust dialogue featuring funders and organizations that will spark new ideas\, grapple with questions\, and drive forward-thinking solutions for economic empowerment. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual event\, open to everyone. It will be livestreamed and available as a recording after the event. Don’t miss this opportunity to join the conversation. Register and submit your questions today! \n\n\n\nInterested in attending? SUMMARY:FedTalk: Enabling Instant Payments for All
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, instant payments have been gaining traction since The Clearing House implemented the Real-Time-Payments (RTP®) service in 2017 and the Federal Reserve implemented its FedNow® Service in 2023. Instant payments allow consumers and businesses to pay and receive payments immediately and more conveniently. More than 1\,000 US financial institutions out of a total of roughly 9\,000 in the country are now participating\, with adoption growing slowly but surely each month. \n\n\n\nIf financial institutions are to adopt faster payments\, they will need modern technical capabilities that are ready to perform payment functions instantly around the clock every day of the year. Core banking service providers\, or providers who assist financial institutions in processing payment transactions to customer bank accounts\, play an important role in helping financial institutions modernize their technical infrastructure and connect them and their customers to instant payments. \n\n\n\nPlease join the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s Ken Isaacson\, senior vice president and payments advisor\, as he moderates a panel of Federal Reserve payments professionals for a conversation about connecting to instant payments\, the role of core banking and other service providers\, and the benefits this new payments rail offers to financial institutions and their business and consumer customers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nTheresa Bialowas\, Principal\, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland\n\n\n\nFumiko Hayashi\, Vice President\, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City\n\n\n\nDoug Keller\, Sr. Manager\, FedNow Onboarding Strategy\, Federal Reserve Financial Services\n\n\n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\n\nKen Isaacson\, Senior Vice President and Payments Advisor\, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Connecting Communities: Approaches to and Lessons Learned from Community-Engaged Research
DESCRIPTION:Watch on Demand \n\n\n\nConversations with the community make a difference. Community development practitioners and policymakers recognize the value of conducting research with communities as partners through community-engaged research. This approach invites stakeholders into the research process by centering their perspectives and elevating their expertise. These discussions help to create better services\, understand policy barriers\, and learn what’s working best. \n\n\n\nThis webinar will feature examples of how community-engaged methods can highlight the experience of workers and jobseekers. Attendees will hear what researchers are learning from these conversations and how institutions\, organizations\, or communities can leverage the same principles. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJamilica BurkeChief Strategy and Impact OfficerSeeding Success \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCeleste FryeChief Executive Officer Public Works Partners \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChioke Mose-TelesfordDirector of Improving Practices and OutcomesCorporation for a Skilled Workforce \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSarah MillerPrincipal Adviser\, Community & Economic Development Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAshley PutnamDirector\, Economic Growth & Mobility ProjectFederal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaula TkacExecutive Vice President and Director of ResearchFederal Reserve Bank of Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSydney DiavuaAssistant Vice President\, Community DevelopmentFederal Reserve Bank of St. Louismoderator \n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Connecting Communities®\n\n\n\nReal people.
