SUMMARY:Exploring Flood Risk for New York City Renters\, Homeowners\, and Communities of Color
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, September 5\, 2024\, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York will host a virtual event exploring findings from two papers on flood risk to low-and-moderate income households in New York City. The papers\, released earlier this year by the Community Development team\, found that approximately one in ten low- to moderate-income people\, immigrants\, and racial and ethnic minorities in New York City live in a flood-prone census tract. The event will detail which New York City neighborhoods are most exposed to flood risk. Speakers will also discuss the financial impact of flooding on residents\, including property loss and damage\, lost labor hours\, and health costs. \n\n\n\nThis event will be of interest to researchers\, nonprofits\, community bankers\, policymakers\, and small business owners. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Resources\n\n\n\nFlood Risk and Basement Housing in New York City: The Impact of Extreme Weather on Vulnerable Housing Stock \n\n\n\nFlooding Impacts on Household Finances: Insights from Focus Groups in New York City \n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:GenAI for Economic Opportunity: Early Learnings from Philanthropy and Nonprofits
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on August 27 for a series of panel discussions from our EmergingTech Economic Research Network (EERN) on how philanthropy and nonprofit organizations throughout our District’s Bay Area are navigating the emergence of generative artificial intelligence in the communities they serve.  \n\n\n\nAs more private and public sector organizations expand their use of genAI tools\, there is a growing need to understand how this new technology will impact the economic opportunity of low-income communities. To help meet this need\, we have organized an exploration of genAI’s potential to address barriers to economic mobility. Showcasing philanthropic and nonprofit organizations leading the effort to leverage genAI to benefit low-income households\, this event will feature a presentation from Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI on the use of genAI in the social impact sector\, a panel discussion with philanthropic leaders; and a showcase of early use cases highlighting genAI’s potential. \n\n\n\nWith its ability to invest in design and experimentation\, philanthropy has the power to partner with community organizations to employ new technologies like genAI in support of underserved communities. We will spotlight the diverse ways philanthropic efforts can bolster the deployment of Gen AI within organizations dedicated to serving marginalized communities. \n\n\n\nWe’re excited for you to join us in a robust dialogue featuring funders and organizations that will spark new ideas\, grapple with questions\, and drive forward-thinking solutions for economic empowerment. \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual event\, open to everyone. It will be livestreamed and available as a recording after the event. Don’t miss this opportunity to join the conversation. Register and submit your questions today! \n\n\n\nInterested in attending? Spots are limited. Register soon. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:FedTalk: Enabling Instant Payments for All
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, instant payments have been gaining traction since The Clearing House implemented the Real-Time-Payments (RTP®) service in 2017 and the Federal Reserve implemented its FedNow® Service in 2023. Instant payments allow consumers and businesses to pay and receive payments immediately and more conveniently. More than 1\,000 US financial institutions out of a total of roughly 9\,000 in the country are now participating\, with adoption growing slowly but surely each month. \n\n\n\nIf financial institutions are to adopt faster payments\, they will need modern technical capabilities that are ready to perform payment functions instantly around the clock every day of the year. Core banking service providers\, or providers who assist financial institutions in processing payment transactions to customer bank accounts\, play an important role in helping financial institutions modernize their technical infrastructure and connect them and their customers to instant payments. \n\n\n\nPlease join the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s Ken Isaacson\, senior vice president and payments advisor\, as he moderates a panel of Federal Reserve payments professionals for a conversation about connecting to instant payments\, the role of core banking and other service providers\, and the benefits this new payments rail offers to financial institutions and their business and consumer customers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nTheresa Bialowas\, Principal\, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland\n\n\n\nFumiko Hayashi\, Vice President\, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City\n\n\n\nDoug Keller\, Sr. Manager\, FedNow Onboarding Strategy\, Federal Reserve Financial Services\n\n\n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\n\nKen Isaacson\, Senior Vice President and Payments Advisor\, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

Community development practitioners and policymakers recognize the value of conducting research with communities as partners through community-engaged research. This approach invites stakeholders into the research process by centering their perspectives and elevating their expertise. These discussions help to create better services\, understand policy barriers\, and learn what’s working best. \n\n\n\nThis webinar will feature examples of how community-engaged methods can highlight the experience of workers and jobseekers. Attendees will hear what researchers are learning from these conversations and how institutions\, organizations\, or communities can leverage the same principles. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJamilica BurkeChief Strategy and Impact OfficerSeeding Success \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCeleste FryeChief Executive Officer Public Works Partners \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChioke Mose-TelesfordDirector of Improving Practices and OutcomesCorporation for a Skilled Workforce \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSarah MillerPrincipal Adviser\, Community & Economic Development Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAshley PutnamDirector\, Economic Growth & Mobility ProjectFederal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaula TkacExecutive Vice President and Director of ResearchFederal Reserve Bank of Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSydney DiavuaAssistant Vice President\, Community DevelopmentFederal Reserve Bank of St. Louismoderator \n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Connecting Communities®\n\n\n\nReal people. SUMMARY:Economic Impact Beyond Tribal Economies
DESCRIPTION:Join us July 17 for Economic Impact Beyond Tribal Economies\, a Center for Indian Country Development (CICD) event exploring the local economic impacts of the two largest and fastest-growing sources of revenue for Native communities: gaming and federal contracting. \n\n\n\nTribally owned casinos generate substantial revenue\, which is often reinvested into the community. But little is known about their impact on their surrounding economies. Recent research by CICD shows how tribally owned casinos affect nearby businesses. \n\n\n\nFederal contracting is a rapidly expanding source of revenue for tribes and Alaska Native Corporations (ANCs) and a sustainable source of income for Native Hawaiian Organizations (NHOs). Recent CICD research finds that tribal enterprises\, ANCs\, and NHOs—collectively known as Native entity enterprises—regularly subcontract to non-Native small businesses. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, CICD researchers will present their findings on how gaming and federal contracting impact local businesses and economies. Guest panelists will underscore how Native entity enterprises enhance economic diversification\, foster entrepreneurship\, and strengthen economic infrastructure across various local economies in and outside of Indian Country. Participants will hear from this dynamic line-up\, ask questions\, and explore the lessons Native entities have learned as they continue to pursue viable and sustainable revenue-development opportunities. \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll be part of this important conversation! \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\nRandall Akee\, Chair\, American Indian Studies Interdepartmental Program; and Associate Professor\, Department of Public Policy; UCLA\n\n\n\nJacqui Baldwin-LeClair\, Policy Analyst\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nElliot Charette\, Senior Research Assistant\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nCasey Lozar\, Vice President and Director\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis\n\n\n\nTralynna Sherrill Scott\, Chief Economist\, Cherokee Nation Businesses\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:00-2:05 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome\, Overview\, and Introductions\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Casey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:05-2:15 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nGaming Spillover\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Elliot Charette (Lac Du Flambeau and Red Cliff Bands of Lake Superior Chippewa)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:15-2:25 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nInterconnection of Native Entity Enterprises to Small Business Subcontractors\n\n\n\nPresenter: Jacqui Baldwin-LeClair\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:25-2:45 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nPanel: Federal Contracting and Tribal Economic Development\n\n\n\nModerator: Casey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes)\, CICD\, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nRandall Akee (Native Hawaiian)\, UCLA\n\n\n\nTralynna Sherrill Scott (Cherokee Nation)\, Cherokee Businesses\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:45-2:55 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nQA:\n\n\n\n\nRandall Akee\n\n\n\nJacqui Baldwin-LeClair\n\n\n\nElliot Charette\n\n\n\nTralynna Sherrill Scott\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2:55-3:00 pm CT \n\n\n\n\n\nClosing Remarks and Preview of Coming Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Manufactured Housing: Increasing Access and Preserving Affordability
DESCRIPTION:Manufactured housing is often cited as a potential solution to two closely linked challenges in the U.S. housing market: inadequate supply and lack of affordable options for those looking to buy a home. Historically\, the unusual way these homes have been treated from a financial and legal standpoint has diminished their potential\, both for prospective homebuyers and for the 4.9 million existing owners of manufactured homes. \n\n\n\nBut in recent years\, federal\, state\, and local actors have taken steps to alleviate these challenges. To highlight promising reforms\, strategies\, and innovations in the manufactured housing sector\, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and The Pew Charitable Trusts Housing Policy Initiative are convening experts from a wide range of perspectives for a conversation on solutions. \n\n\n\nPresenters will discuss recent efforts to improve the availability of safe and affordable financing\, programs to address aging manufactured homes and community infrastructure\, and opportunities to improve the residential security and wealth-building potential of manufactured homeownership. \n\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Pathways to Progress: Workforce Strategies for Kentucky’s Emerging Adults
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, the St. Louis Fed’s Community Development team held roundtables to better understand the needs of our region’s workforce\, and community leaders from across Kentucky offered their views. This event builds on relationships formed during that process and leverages analysis to foster a discussion about structural barriers to labor force participation in the region. \n\n\n\nIn 2022\, 17\,500 young adults (ages 16-24) in the Louisville region were not working or in school. However\, programs that could help shape future workforce trends are showing progress. \n\n\n\nJoin us to hear from business and industry leaders\, community organizations and educational partners from across the state who have deployed successful approaches to addressing many of the challenges that hinder young adults from participating more fully in the labor market\, such as those involving housing\, transportation and child care. Speakers will share how they are working together to expand opportunities for Kentucky’s young adults. \n\n\n\nYou will have an opportunity to submit questions for a Q&A session in advance during the registration process. SUMMARY:Rural Economic Development Summit: Broadband Infrastructure and Workforce Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Broadband infrastructure is crucial for rural communities in today’s digital economy. Broadband connects people to education\, jobs\, healthcare\, and other essential services. But a shortage of skilled workers to build and maintain broadband infrastructure poses a significant challenge\, threatening to widen the digital divide in underserved and unserved regions and limiting opportunities for economic growth and innovation in rural communities. With an unprecedented level of federal broadband funding on its way to communities for infrastructure\, there is a need to build community capacity and local labor forces to effectively leverage it. Strategically addressing the workforce shortage is essential for bridging this gap and ensuring equitable access to digital resources\, empowering rural economies to compete in the global market. \n\n\n\nThe Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and the Center for Rural Pennsylvania invite you to a rural economic development summit to explore this important topic.View the program agenda. \n\n\n\nWhy Attend? At this one-day convening\, we’ll focus on innovative and equitable broadband infrastructure development strategies. You’ll learn about opportunities to strengthen workforce pipelines and foster greater coordination among partners\, as well as proven solutions that have worked in communities across the country.  \n\n\n\nJoin panelists and your peers to share your insights\, discuss policies and best practices\, and learn ways to address the workforce shortage by investing in training programs and incentivizing workforce development. Add your voice to the conversation to unlock the full potential of broadband infrastructure to increase connectivity and drive prosperity in your area.Who Should Attend? This gathering is for rural economic and workforce development leaders\, nonprofit leaders working in communities with limited broadband connectivity\, government representatives\, funders\, and other rural decision-makers who want to know more about best practices and ways to deploy innovative and equitable economic development strategies.Participation is free\, but registration is required.
