What We Know About Non-Competes and How States Are Addressing Them

The Minneapolis Fed invites you to join us June 22 for a virtual convening about recent evidence and state action on non-compete agreements. The event will provide practitioners with new information about this key aspect of the labor market and how it affects the experiences of low- and moderate-income workers. We are excited to share these new findings, as we believe that better understanding how the labor market functions for workers is a key part of the Minneapolis Fed’s mission of pursuing an economy that works for all of us.

Minneapolis Fed staff will begin the conversation by presenting findings from the Federal Reserve Board’s newly released Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking, or SHED. The presentation will provide information on who has non-competes and how the new data can help us better understand their experiences. Next, a panel of subject matter experts from Illinois and Colorado will discuss their home states’ recent changes in non-compete rules and how those policy changes are affecting workers and employers. The panelists will also have a chance to respond to findings from the new data and discuss whether it resonates with their on-the-ground observations.
